Title: What did you expect of the Russians...
Post by: Wanderer on August 09, 2007, 11:07:37 am
Seems like several of the pics/videos released from the Russian Arctic expedition just a little while ago are fakes...

Some are from Titanic :D
Ok.. Ok.. Titanic used archived material but still..

Top image was released by Reuters (who got it from official Russian RTR channel)..
Below one is a screencapture from Titanic

Those who can read Finnish could stop by at IS website for more laughs

Yeah, just saw this thing on the news.

I mean, fo crying out loud. Why can't the Russians just admit that they can't get to the bottom of the sea at the North Pole? Why were they even going there in the first place? Can't imagine what would be so interesting there.

Oil and gas.

And therefore money.

What? Is there oil and/or gas there?

And if so, why would they fake the whole conquering-the-bottom-of-the-sea thing? Are they trying to distract us from their true intentions (which would be the part about stealing gas and oil)?

Surely Oil and gas under the miles of ice and freezing cold water at the north pole would be so prohibitively expensive to extract as to not be worthwhile looking for yet? We can't even get the stuff south of New Zealand at any kind of cost effectiveness yet.

This actually explains quite a bit for me.  A week or so ago, Russia claimed that the sea / sea floor under the North Pole (and it's resources) belonged to Russia, even though they were clearly in international waters.  Since they couldn't "conquer the sea floor," I guess they are just going to claim it as their own.

Oh dear. This it yet another provocative action that might even make the yankee government mad enough to start a fight. If anyone else wanted the oil/gas in the North Pole, it would be them.
[sarcasm]Good thing I live (relatively speaking) next door to Russia[/sarcasm].

Maybe I should move. Like, to Greece or something.

They don't plan to extract anything, at least not with this generation of machinery.
What this is: Good press for Russia (land grab and showing off their capability at sea =  political Profit) and bad press for the US (fanning the flames of GW panic on the side, which makes people buy carbon credits, which are minted like monopoly money by Russia and friends = Cash Profit).

If someone really did sort out how to get at whatever is under the ice cap in a profitable manner, and if it really was worth anything, it would take much more than a minisub and a flag to secure it from competing nations.
