I thought cruisers weren't used. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
-
By the Terrans of the GTVA. Everyone else still uses them.
-
So Vasudans use them... will you be wanting the Upgraded Aten? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-

But why? The Terrans had the best cruisers..... The 'Zog ones just sucked, and the Shivan ones were only good for shooting capships. The Leviathan and Aeolus were perfects..... enough beams/flak to give any oncoming fighters an economy-size dosage of whoop-*** . So why would they turf them completely?
-
Cruisers where found to be unreliable against Shivan capships, with the advent of the Deimos, Phobos, Neptune, and Taisan, the old cruiser classes where made obselete by stronger sips which could do their job. The Vasudan cruiser will belong to the VCI fleet if it is done. So it'll be for special ops. The GTVA Terrans wil get the Eclipse Class Cruiser by the end of the first chapter anyway (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Cruisers aren't supposed to go up against heavy capships. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif) They're supposed to blow the snot out of fighters and act as heavy escorts for bigger capships. What's cheaper - 3 Aeolus cruisers or one Deimos? And which is gonna eat fighters alive? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
-

The Taisan can perform that role.
-
Give it up, Shrike - it's too late now. :P
-
Yeah, but it's fun to continually pester him about it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
Because I personally totally disagree with the emphasis on bigger = better.

I've never said that I agree with that emphasis (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Uh.... last time I checked you were the head of Inferno. So pretty much by defination, if it's got a bigger = better emphasis, that's what you want....

can I read some kind of frustration in this sentence, Mr Freud? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Well I never said it...
-
Ok, why dont you back off a little Shrike. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/hammer.gif)

Luckily I don't subscribe to Freud so I can actually say stuff like that without it meaning anything other than what I mean it to. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
Anyhow, back to the topic at hand...
-
What exactly are the cruisers going to have on them? Some new shivan beam? Cause combinations of LReds and SReds get boring
-
We'll see once Darkage gets back (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
I agree with Alikchi, LReds and SReds got a little old. Hopefully it is something new. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
I have to agree with Shrike up there, Cruisers definately have their place. But thats okay, there's plenty of room to make that statement elsewhere.
A new Shivan cruiser is definately not a bad thing (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Not mod wise anyways, its bad for everyone else (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Depends on the cruiser, what if a rakshasha was loaded with foodstuffs and it exploded near a starving colony and spam flew all over the place? Shivan spam that is.
-
Whoa, the Raguel looks friggin' sweet. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
I think that we're getting to the point where our models 0wn (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif)'s. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Oooh... well, in the light of that new sw33t beam, I think your beloved cruiser has the edge for now. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Erm... Lilith? Rakshasa? :P

A Deimos, but only because the Aeolus class of cruisers is so rare after Capella that maybe only 4 exist anyway, and thus would be very hard to get one's hands on. That's why I came up with the GTC Peleus in the first place.
I think the idea of an anticap cruiser (an example being the Lilith or the GVC Tuket featured in the 2nd and 3rd campaigns of the Eden Project) that could provide heavy firepower against both fighters AND caps, is a good one, since making a cruiser with heavy beam weapons is much, much cheaper than making a ship about 7x as massive (corvettes are about 3x as long, 1.5x height, 1.5x width). It would also be more mobile, and easier to replace if lost in battle.

Update: More support for my argument that anticap cruisers are l33t: (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
I've tested the GVC Tuket against several different types of Shivan warships. It can destroy just about anything up to (and including) a Moloch, with the exception of a Lilith, although a Tuket-Lilith match mainly depends on whether the Tuket kills the Lilith's beam turret or not.
Just goes to show that fast, mobile anticap cruisers which can be pumped out very quickly and (comparatively) cheaply are quite nifty. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

And for info on a cruiser class that is meant to replace the Aeolus (mainly because it was cheaper yet just as effective), go here ("http://pub97.ezboard.com/fmetalsirensforumsfrm4.showMessage?topicID=6.topic").

Pimp City, I tell you!

Hmmm, you know those things would probably need buttloads of maintenance, right? Those kind of massive refits tend to be very expensive and in the long run be less useful than entirely new ships. Which is why you see very few converted ships except during wartime, where numbers and how soon they can get into service are the overidding concern, and not service life and economy.

Heh, I was [jk] about it anyway. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Besides, if Snipes and DC were still around... -
*gak*
I'm working on my first ship. Been working on it for months. o_o

Just done another one, part way through another, and have reskinned the entire EA fleet. Not bad for one nights work (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I can try and make an entire TC myslef.
GRDLA, TSC, SSPF, Bandits, Aliens - ah pants!
www.ARMOUREDSTAR.com ("http://www.ARMOUREDSTAR.com")
-
Yeah but remember how many ships we already have...
-
I was gonna ask that, how many?
-
Alltogether...at least 110 ships are planned...
-
well 110 mods from fighters to cargo, freighters, AWACS, sub space gates, carriers, corvettes, sentry guns, juggernaughts, cruisers, support ships etc...
-
Thats sounds TOO familar! (not to be out done, 120 was a rough guess, I have about 85 models and thats just ships not all the other stuff at least 5 bases, MUST have a 3D planet or 2, gun platforms, HDDS (High Density Detection System, my = of AWACS), news ships (2) a couple of Civ ships, jump gates. More but carn't remember.) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
What is Infurno anyway?

A campaign...

That answers all my questions...

oh sorry, did I just type that?
WEll it IS pimp city in here...
[This message has been edited by LAW ENFORCER (edited 12-16-2001).]

Ah from your site is says your doing a total conversion, we're not. Our story and ships still revolve around the FS2 universe and a few ships are still in it. That's why we're a campaign still (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
I guessed that from your answer. I don't have to resaerch, or anything for me TC, its just think and GO!
-
I started this campaign with 3 reskinned ships, now I'm pushing TC (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Heh maybe one day I'll use all these ships for a non FS story. but for now I'll stick to this one (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
So, the EA ships are ALL going to go from the orion-textures look to a new, reflective, death-star-shiny look?
-
Well if he's pimping...
-
Holy reskin, batman!
-
Alright, settle down people. At least keep it marginally close to topic.
-
Not only is it a reskin, it's a reskin with subsystem and weapon rearrangement, not to mention a different TBL entry! How much would you be willing to pay for this great ship? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
Hmm, well let's see..I have a $10 a month allowance..uhh..say, 2 bucks (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Sold to the valued member in the blue box!

Actually, no. The hull sections of the head and engine are the same, basically, but the internals are much newer. Although, the engine section is largely untouched (except for a tune-up) since it was working okay anyway.
It's the fact that the ship is partially prefabricated which makes it more appealing to Command; it can be pumped out faster and at a lower cost. Considering the plot of WoF, it would be preferable to the more expensive Aeolus.
The other reason is, Aeoluses have to have a ton of ultra-compact (and ultra-expensive) systems to support their high turret density. Peleuses are less condensed, so they don't need that extra compactness. Besides, Peleuses are better against capships than Aeoluses, thanks to its forward MGreen.
