Title: changing tables
Post by: commander DS on August 12, 2007, 03:42:29 pm
I'm trying to change some of the info in the tables, but something seems to go wrong the ways Ive tryed so far

i started by opening the up the inferno main VP file in the VP viewer, found the ships and weapons tbl and made some changes on things like ship descriptions, speeds hitpoints etc. but even when i say save i go back in and the changes arnt there. i don't know if thats the right way to do those changes or not.

so then i tryed extracting them to a separate tables folder in side the mod folder/data made my changes and they stayed, but try launching Fred or the game i get tonnes of errors that all look kinda like this

Error: ships.tbl(line 2454:
Error: Required token = [#End], [$Subsystem:] or [$Name], found [$ND 239 234 134].

File:J:\src\cvs\fs2_open_3_6_9.final\code\Parse\PARSELO.CPP
Line: 659
[This filename points to the location of a file on the computer that built this executable]

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

so if any one could tell me the right way to make these changes or what I'm doing wrong would be very thank full

Use some text editor and check the order of the table entries. Especially line 2453.

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,48396.0.html - i suspect you have similar problem.

Ok, let's analyze the situation.

You might have corrupted something with your changes, so I highly recommend to eliminate the tables you made so far. If you want, you can copy your tech descriptions and paste them into a .txt file so you can use them later.

Extract the tables with VPVIEW and open them with notepad. Try to pay as much attention as you can because an error crashes the game.

Once you have finished with your changes, you can simply place your modified tbls in your Inferno folder and choose Inferno as MOD. :)

yea ok thanks, thats what ive been doing mybe i changed somthing by acident but i havnt really gone near any of those lines ive really only been wokring with the anciants .

if i say ok to that error i get one for the next line and the next .......... i got bored after line 3000. but its not looking hopefull

Nope its not my changes as soon as i extract the tables to the mod folder even before ive changed anything the game stops working and i get those errors. so as some one that donesnt know anything about this stuff im thinking its clashing or somthing since the tables ive extracted are still part of the main inferno vp file. mybe is doenst like me having them in a tables file as well

what about if i dont extract them and dont open it in vp veiw instead open the intire main vp in a editor and look throught the hole thing  and do my changes. can note pad open that much data i thought it could when i tryed a while ago but its not at the moment

It sounds like all you've been doing is opening the tables straight from the VP and editing them, which you can't do - all you're doing is saving to some temporary file somewhere, you can't write to the VP, so that's the wrong way to do the changes :p

Did you extract them to the inferno folder/data/tables?

Do this. Delete anything you've done so far, and go into the Inferno mod folder. Create a new folder, "data", and under it create a folder "tables". Extract the inferno tables there and try editing and saving. Then, make sure to point FRED to the inferno mod folder (create a shortcut for it, go to properties, and add -mod inferno mod folder name).

i dont quite know what you want me to show you. and theres not really much point as its not what im changing thts making the problem
i get these errors as soon as i extract the tbls not when i change somthing. and all im trying to do it boost the ancients as in freespace they seem average  and their descriptions sounds rubish and i feal form their name they should be better

so the real problem it that i carnt change the tbl's and not that my changes causing problems

There are no Ancients in Freespace 2 .

It sounds to me that you have a problem with mods.

done it

i opend the main INF_ main vp file  extracted each and every file to a new directory which i called inferno main rebuild put all the file to their prober folders then made my adjustments and then used vpmage tht i found in the tools directory to reform it all up into a new inf_main vp file which inculded my changed tbls. i was right it was just tht the tables where clashing with the main vp file. but now it all works nice they got shilds now and more improvments

jusr got to do the same with the patch now as it patches back some of my changes

There's the problem. You wanted proper folders.
