Title: So... there is/was a meteor shower tonite.
Post by: Dark Hunter on August 13, 2007, 12:41:58 am
The Perseids annual meteor shower, in point of fact.

I just spent an hour watching the sky from the roof of my house, and saw no fewer than a dozen meteors. Was pretty fun, as this is the first shower I've ever actually bothered to watch. :)

Anyone else bother to see it?

Technically, it is still going on, so if you are in the northern hemisphere and it is dark, you could go see a few.

I saw about ten in a less than ten minute period.  :p  After seeing this thread I drove up on a nearby mountain and watched for a bit.

I once got up to see Leonids... It was rather fascinating, there were a lot more than a dozen meteors visible despite some light clouds. It wasn't really a meteor storm level of activity, but impressive nevertheless.

I just wish I'll see a full-fledged meteor storm at some point on my life. And a supernova.

I was looking out my window. No wonder I didn't see anything.

Mmmm... Supernova...

A supernova would be a neat spectacle indeed .

Well, there are several candidates for possible Supernovae in our lifetimes, but none of them are dangerously close to us so we should be safe :) If we get really lucky, we might even see a Hypernova in our lifetimes as I believe both YV Canis Majoris and Eta Carinae are nearing the end of the line.

Same here.  The last time I saw them was just :eek2:.  Some came in so steep that they exploded in the upper atmosphere...It was surprisingly loud.

The FS2 supernova is not realistic at all, IIRC.

I went out last night and saw nothing...maybe I should have a quick peek.

city lights ruined it here...only  5 meteors were seen in a whole 3 hour period.

ps: cappella will probably blow in about 45, 000 years. i'd go for canis majoris...

Canis Majoris is not a star, it's a constellation... but there is a certain star in that constellation, namely VY Canis Majoris, which is a viable supernova candidate.

Other notable ones include Betelgeuze aka. Alpha Orionis (huzzah for northern hemisphere), Eta Carinae (southern hemisphere exclusive), Spica (Alpha Virginis) and Antares (Alpha Scorpii). There are others as well, but AFAIK these all belong to brightest visible stars available. Can't remember others without resorting to wiki, and I can't bother right now.

Mmm... daytime visible supernova... One that makes shadows at night. I once was lucky enough to be outside on very clear winter night with new moon, so the sky was almost completely black. And lo behold, you could actually see Venus making shadows on the forest... It was somewhat unreal experience.

Would be kinda awesome to be outside late at evening, with clear sky, then suddenly one of the stars goes like *fwoommm*. What else could you possibly think than "holy shizzle..."
