Well, being freshly 18, I decided with a buddy of mine to pick up my first rifle since I always had an interest in rifles. We wanted something old and reliable that would fit the bill, and originally went looking for Mauser's since they are nifty old WW2 'battle rifles'. Well, I found something just as precious:

Looks pretty much like that, cept mine has a nifty soviet strap. As a matter of fact...

The metal parts are missing because I gave them to a gunsmith for some awesome bluing because I failed so badly at bluing... the cold kind that is.

In pieces the gun is pretty simple - how it's built isn't complex which makes it easy to maintain and care for. Plus the bullets are just awesomely huge and powerful... (yes that is really me in the picture)

I took it shooting and it jumps back like a mule. Throws your aiming off, especially with iron sights at 100 yards. The first time I shot it I was worried it would just explode when I pulled the trigger, but it was a satisfying roar with the ecstasy-inducing cling as the bullet-casing is ejected from the chamber and spirals through the air, its brass reflecting the glowing afternoon sun of a Texas afternoon.
Too much, but whatever the case, I'm not sure what my fascination with old rifles is, but I have one. Mine in particular was manufactured in 1945, at the end of the war, so it probably never saw action but I like the joke that it might've been owned by a Russian soldier who smoked Nazi's. Then it'd be a rifle haunted with the souls of dead Nazi's or something, right?
Anyhow, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's fond of old WW2 relics. I still want to get a hold of a K98 Mauser and someday, when I am loaded enough, a Springfield or Garand. Discuss teh gunz of ye old.
-
I've fired an Enfield and a Springfield myself. The Springfield is a lot like you describe; kicks, the barrel jerks up, it's noisy as hell. The Enfield is a lot smoother. Firing it you can see why it's considered the best bolt-action military rifle ever made. I'm not sure of the vintage of the M1911 (screw you, I can't afford a vintage rifle) I own, but an educated guess says something around Korea.
One of my dreams is to find somebody who'll let me shoot a BAR, but there aren't all that many of them around, and they're restricted as all hell even though the assault weapons ban has lapsed.
However honestly, you want a gun that is old? My father is a Civil War buff and owns a vintage Spencer carbine. I've fired it. It's never going to win awards for much of anything, but it doesn't kick nearly as hard as you'd expect until you remember this thing was supposed to be fired from horseback, on the move.

I've got a Walther ppk - Police variant (iraqi i think?) and a Remington, but the less said about my trphys the better, Also an old AK my uncle bought back from the first Gulf for me
-
Wow, I do believe I have one of those.
What type of round does it take? 7.62x54R? The rifle looks really really familiar.
We've got a Mauser around here somewhere, but most of our rifles, which we have plenty of, are too new to really fall into this. Although, my Dad's Girlfriend has one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauser_C96. She's got everything with it too, including the cleaning kit. Her father apparently brought it back from WWI.
Right now I'm looking for a Garand and I'll be looking for a BAR when I get out of College.

I've never owned or even fired a gun in my life.

Yes, the round size is 7.62x54R - big, like the picture shows. :D
-
I really want a vintage PPSh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PPSH), 'nough said.

Sucks to be both of you! :p
Back when I was a boy scout I got to shoot .22s and shotguns all the time. Course that was a couple years ago and haven't touched one since, except for airsoft. And that's not all that exciting. :(

I took rifle marksmanship training a couple years ago... But then I cried because video games aren't real :(.

Sweet, then I have this rifle. Thing's heavy as hell, but pretty accurate.
I'm not big on bolt actions though, I've just shot it a few times.
-
We have a M1911 Colt, and I have shot an 1898 (?) Springfield Carbine (.45). Both are pretty cool, but have a massive kick.
-
Yay! I just got my metal parts back so I can show you the new and AWESOME bluing job they did.
-
Wish I had a rifle (well, I sorta do)... my dad does, and my bro's got a shotgun, eventually, I'll get a rifle, hopefully a big pistol too, I'd like to see how one of those feels going off. Right now I have a Daisy PowerLine 901 rifle, and a PowerLine 617X pistol. When I get enough money... ;7 (Gotta stop upgrading my computers & buying new ones... :( )

There she is in all her finished splendor. It's a real pleasure to work the bolt on it again just out of comfort.

Umm, they look blurry. :p Any chance of seeing the first pic in high-res?
-
First pic I got off a website just so everyone would know what it looks like. No hi-res. :(
The rest I've taken myself - sorry if it looks blurry. :P
-
It's blurry by design... you applied some sort of filter to it, I can tell. (lke a canvas painting filter or something)
EDIT: Don't you have a digital camera? Or at least a regular camera & a scanner?
-
Oh, the artsy picture thats all white yeah I edited, the rest I just took snapshots of - no filters.
Thought you were talking about all of them. ^.^
Yes I have a digital camera.

Mosin Nagant, huh? What you should do is wait till you're 100 years old, modify the rifle to shoot tranquilizer darts, grow a big white beard, and learn to photosynthesize.

Ironically enough, I live within a mile of where the Enfield rifles were made, at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, North London ;)
