Title: Help a n00b? Voice file question.
Post by: PenguinKommando on August 16, 2007, 04:09:29 pm
Im really new to this, Ive modded (read: installed simple mods) some games before, but this one, for some reason or another, I cant get whats going on. Um, I used this Truey's Installer, and it said it would just update and install everything, I figured it would be fine, but when I played, the voice for Breifings and such was replaced with Microsoft Sam. I absolutely hate it, it ruins the atmosphere of the game, to me, and would like to know how to return it. Please, any help in getting Microsoft Sam off my game would be appreciated. Thank you. I'm using Launcher 5, and uh FS2 Open version 3.6.9 or something similar, I believe. Again, thank you for any help.

Ive looked in a folder in the FS2 main folder titled Data, then in subfolder voice, subfolder Command Briefings, but nothing is there. This, too, I think is one thing confusing me.

Have you checked the settings in the Speech tab of your Launcher?

Under speech tab settings, it does give me an option to change the voice, but only Microsoft Sam is in the list I can change it to. Theres a button saying "Get additional Voice files" but it links to a dead page, a 404 error.

More importantly, there's the part "Use Simulated speech in:". Are the options below checked? If they are, uncheck them immediately before Microsoft Sam manages to say something.

All right, I understand, thank you very much. I will use this, thank you. But, if it isnt too much trouble, and you dont have to answer at all, do you know if there is any way I can get the original voice that played back?

And again, thank you very much.

Wait... are you actually missing the voices for the main FS2 campaign? Check if there's a file called stu_fs2.vp in your main FreeSpace 2 folder. If not, you'll have to get it from... somewhere, I don't know where.

Hey, that's what we're here for.  :)

I'm not sure if this works, but you could try the HotU's FreeSpace 2 page (http://www.the-underdogs.info/zip.php?id=4150). I haven't tried downloading individual files from there myself, but basically you should just type stu_fs2.vp into the text field and hit Enter. If it doesn't work, we'll have to think of something else.

Did you actually select to download the voice files via the Installer?

I had the exact same problem as the original poster.

I would be listening to Microsoft Mike during the briefings instead of the awesome voice acting.  I solved the problem by installing the adpcm audio codecs thats mentioned in the readme.  Unfortunately the explaination that was provided there didn't work for me, but I found this walkthrough that solved the problem
http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/2018p1.html

hope it helps ya.
