This survey has expired - please do not send answers to me if you don't want to - this topic is now open for general discussion, so any answers will not be included in my results. You may post your answers here now, since they aren't part of the survey. Thanks :)
Hi, people. I’m doing this survey for a psychology project at college. Please follow the ethical guidelines below, as it is required to be valid and to avoid conflict.
Submit your results via email ([email protected]) or PM. Do not submit your answers via a post, as this will be breaching ethical guidelines and your results cannot be calculated. I need about 20 submissions. Thank-you and good luck! :)
Your participation in this questionnaire is appreciated. This survey is about extraterrestrial life. Any information you provide will remain anonymous. Please do not provide personal details not required by the questionnaire. If you provide personal details not required, they will be erased and will not be included in this survey or disclosed to anyone. You are not required to answer a question you feel uncomfortable with, and you may withdraw at any time. If you wish to withdraw after you have submitted your details, you may do so, and all details you have provided will be erased.
Thank-you for your participation.

Single-celled micro-organisms □
Unsophisticated organisms with intellect less than humans □
Sophisticated beings with intellect equal to or greater than humans □
Why?
3.) Do you think you will ever see extraterrestrial life first-hand?

5.) Why don’t you believe that extraterrestrial life exists?
(Do not answer this question if you answered “Yes” to question 1)
End of survey.
Thank-you for your participation.
Sorry about all the “Why?”s, but it is needed to gain more info.
By the way, you are free to comment on this, as long as it isn’t part of your answers. :)

There's always one! - Karajorma
yes, i know im crazy. your point? -original poster
That if you can't be bothered to actually the first post in the topic you shouldn't be replying either. Especially considering you're already on thin ice as it is - Karajorma
i think i just stopped believing in the unknown. -original poster

PM'ed. And I gotta learn to read :p
-
well tell us when this is over and we'll post what we said and have a proper discussion about it.
-
I agree, it would be really interesting to hear people's opinions on this topic.
-
Well, Ill stop collecting results by early September or when I get around 20 replies.
Then you can post here as much as you want, since the survey is finished, and I don't believe anyone can be offended by this topic(reffering to "ethical guidelines")
I've sent a thank-you PM to you all :)
-
You will post the results right?
-
IIRC part of the ethical guidelines says he has to.
-
There's nothing in the ethical guidelines that say your results can't be posted, as long as they are anonymous. (Unless everyone agrees to have names attatched, but I see no point in that since everyone will be commenting)
Anyone else want to participate?
This topic will be free to discussion on Tuesday, last week in August, hopefully.
-
You can freely discuss this topic, those of you who wnated to. :)
Results should be up this week.
EDIT: I thought....people were...interested in this :(
EDIT2: Or mabye...they wanted me to PM them...........
*rushes off to do some PM'ing*

No 7
5.) Why don’t you believe that extraterrestrial life exists?
(Do not answer this question if you answered “Yes” to question 1)
They are the ones that are multiple choice, I wasn't going to post all the "why?" ones...to much work : ;)
;)Hmmm... I think... I use...this smiley......a lot ;)
-
hey! we can talk about it now!
1) yes
2) Sophisticated beings with intellect equal to or greater than humans, if it happened once it can happen again
3) no, unfortunately
4) I think people are seeing "something" it's flying and it's unidentified, so technicaly, yes I think UFO's are real, I very much doubt they are aliens.
-
It would be nice to see humans get past the age of "slow" rockets that don't last very long.
About UFO sightings - if there are really any aliens, you'd think they would have to travel faster than the speed of light to get anywhere, unless they are hiding in our solar system somewhere. :nervous:
They could have a secret base in the asteroid field!
-
they could have a secret base on the other side of our moon / on our polar cap, and we wouldnt detect it with our "oh SO advanced" sensors ;)
-
What make me laugh is that there are people who believe that there are aliens with the kind of advanced technology that allows them to cross the almost immeasurable gulf of space at faster than light speeds which we currently find impossible to even derive the theory for. And that these aliens then have then managed to repeatedly crash. :D
-
That's pretty weird how they would crash into Earth - if it were true, imagine what they would be like on their home planet! :nervous:

Maybe they just never worked out the brakes?
-
Maybe they changed the rules of space time and developed FTL methods that involved inverted gravitational poles, thus sped up time while slowing it down. This kind of paradox created a fissure in matter and space, which caused them to become unaware of their surroundings...
Or maybe they just never learned not to fly drunk :p

Why?
in all the universe we're the only life period? the only intelligent life? nah, space is too big for there not to be more out there.
3.) Do you think you will ever see extraterrestrial life first-hand?
Yes □
No □
Why?
not likely we'll get far enough out to find them in my life time. unless they come here....never know.
4.) Do you believe that “UFO” sightings are real? Yes □
No □
Why?
some are definatly fakes, but there is something causing the ones that aren't easily explained away. it may not be a space ship, but its something.
5.) Why don’t you believe that extraterrestrial life exists?
(Do not answer this question if you answered “Yes” to question 1)

I may as well post mine as well. Discuss. ;)
1.) Do you believe that extraterrestrial life exists?
Yes.
2.) If yes, do you believe that there is life advanced enough to become:
Sophisticated beings with intellect equal to or greater than humans.
Why?
The universe is quite obviously capable of producing life such as here on Earth.
The universe is big. And there's a lot of time also. So the odds are, if it can happen once somewhere, it'll happen again, in some form or shape in some other place.
The question to me is "why not" instead of "why" in this case.
3.) Do you think you will ever see extraterrestrial life first-hand?
No, with reservation.
Why?
Because of our current knowledge of how universe works, which seems to suggest that interstellar travel would be very time-consuming and thus it's a bit doubtful that
However, I really really hope that our current knowledge of that part of physics can be circumvented somehow, because it'd be really awesome. ;7
4.) Do you believe that “UFO” sightings are real?
Tricky question. Considering the etymology of the abbreviation itself, yes, there undoubtedly are countless observations of unidentified flying objects.
However, I do not "believe", as you put it, that these unidentified flying objects would be any manifestations of extra-terrestrial intelligent life. Assuming this is the context of the question, my answer is "no".
Why?
Same reason as the previous one - our current knowledge of physics suggests it to be highly unlikely that interstellar travel would be happening.
But again, I really hope our current physical knowledge is wrong in that part and interstellar travel will be part of our future, because if it isn't, we're toast in about 500 million years regardless of whether or not we manage to blow ourselves up before that.
I'm a sceptic who hopes to be proven wrong. :D
-
Starting to see a trend here. Here's mine:
1.) Do you believe that extraterrestrial life exists?
Yes.
2.) If yes, do you believe that there is life advanced enough to become:
Yes, sophisticated.
Why?
The universe is a BIG place - No matter how low the odds of it happening, it still seems likely to me that it has happened somewhere.
3.) Do you think you will ever see extraterrestrial life first-hand?
No.
Why?
As before, the universe is huge, and travelling between stars takes a long time. So unless different civilizations are close to eachother from the beginning, they are unlikely to meet eachother unless some way of breaking the 'light-barrier' comes up. And if they were some place in our vicinity, I'd expect us to have some clue to that effect already, but we don't.
4.) Do you believe that “UFO” sightings are real?
No.
Why?
See above. Further, it's suspicious how taking a picture of a supposed UFO can magically turn a high quality camera into one that can only take grainy, unfocused pictures where the lack of detail conveniently covers up any signs of tampering. Finally, there's a ton of things that could easily be mistaken for UFOs.
Well, actually, as long as you don't know what some flying object is, it IS an unidentified flying object, so I suppose I've seen quite a few myself. But I take it you mean the "Alien Spaceship"-definition of UFO instead, and have answered accordingly.

Spooky... :nervous:
Great minds think alike, I suppose. :drevil:
-
My science teacher thinks that (assuming today's physics) if you go over the speed of light, you can't get slower than the speed of light.
So mabye these aliens are flying around trying to land somewhere but can't because they are unable to stop! ;)
I suupose I should have a response to my own questions, now that it's just discussion - but........it's simliar to Shades, and his is slightly simliar to Herra Tohtori, which is simliar to...........
-
At first I was surprised all our answers were so similar...
Then I remembered this is a forum based around a Sci-Fi space sim that deals with 3 alien races.
But, I didn't save a copy of what I sent so I can't post it. I know some of my reasoning differed a bit on the 'why.'
2. Sophisticated
2a. (Why) Basically I considered statistics, one life-bearing planet with at least 2 more potentially life-bearing bodies in a single solar system out of ~200 billion stars of one galaxy of hundreds of billions of galaxies.
4. No
4a. (Why) I don't think we would be interesting enough.
-I am optimistically guessing at MANY advanced civilizations in our own galaxy, or at least that are SO advanced, we would never know of their presence. After all, our planet has only been here for less than 1/3 of the time the universe has existed, and then factor in that Earth has had a few huge evolutionary setbacks (moon formation and asteroid impacts).
-Physics issues aren't factored into my reasoning as I firmly hold to the idea that there are ways around any 'roadblock,' be it a sobriety checkpoint or the speed of light.
Which of course means that I don't think us being alone on this rock amongst ~10^21 star systems in this universe is impossible. Just very unlikely. ;)
-
So mabye these aliens are flying around trying to land somewhere but can't because they are unable to stop! ;)
If aliens were hitting the planet at light speed they wouldn't be leaving crash sites strewn with childlike corpses and strangely liquid metal fragments.
They'd be leaving a large crater and millions of tonnes of dust in the atmosphere. :p
-
They're probably so busy laughing that they weren't paying attention ;)

actually they'd probably be leaving a hole through the planet.

i assume they have shields to travel at LS or FTL .... otherwise a spec of dust = owned
