Urmmm....Hi. First let me apologise if this isn't the right place to post this message.
I've been a long-time lurker as a non-member for quite a while now, and I think it's time that I should say how impressed I am with what you guys have achieved in keeping FreeSpace alive well passed it's initial release. I first got into playing FS2 not so long after it was released in '99. I've always been keen on flight sims as well as space sims and so had cut my gaming teeth on things like X-Wing and other related titles, and FS2 was just as good, if not better. I first came across FSO over 2 and 1/2 years ago and failed to get it fully up and running on an asthmatic 700MHz machine, but ever since we got a new comp I've managed (through trial and error) to get it running as I think it should....Recently I got my hands on FS1 and Silent Threat too, and was surprised that I could get them running on XP in Win98 compatibility mode, albeit with reduced graphical quality.
So far I've played through a few mods/campaigns (like Rain on Ribos 4, Inferno R1, Sync, Transcend, Derelict SCP Ed) and I've really enjoyed them, but considering that these things are made for no profit and during people's spare time, I've always felt that I should show some appreciation, hence this post. With my absolute lack of talent in anything though, I don't see how I can contribute to the project or take up any modding. Maybe I can learn something over time from you lot though.
You all rock big proverbial bells!! Long Live FreeSpace and all that good stuff.

Oh, well... Have a nice day then. :)

Welcome to the HLPBB! :)
I recommend other campaigns like PI and the JAD series, check them out! :)
I personally find FRED easy to learn. Have you ever tried to FRED? :)
-
Oh, yes... FRED is good... FRED is a good boy.
-
I'm part way through PI now ('tis quite good too), and I've had a go and JAD1....not sure I can understand some of the in-jokes in the latter, though.
And yes, I've tried the tutorial that you get with FRED2 but I didn't finish it. I saved it somewhere, maybe I'll try and complete it. I agree that it is simpler to use than it looks.
-
I have complained that tutorial more than once, I can ensure that playing around with SEXPs is the best way to learn FRED. The tutorial is simple, but not that simple. There's an overload of important informations when you finish reading it.
-
I'm just re-reading the tutuorial now, and for me I found the SEXP part to be difficult to get to grips with. I think it's just me being thick and not grasping what Boolean means. Like you say maybe the SEXP bit should be focused on near the start of learning to FRED.
-
Uhm...try to divide it in parts. Don't read it all, focus on the first part before moving to the second.
-
I'll take that on board. :)
-
I usually give hints on MSN. Feel free to contact me there(it is much better than posting here). :)
-
Ok thanks. I reckon I'll complete it eventually, then maybe I'll pick up a few skills.
-
Boolean is a value, yes or no (true or false).
-
Remember, learning variables is important! :)
-
It's worth learning rather than doing 3,000 combinations...

Bug/play testing.
Pretty much anyone should be capable of doing that. All that is required is the willpower to play missions a few times and describe in detail what was going on when something went wrong. I'd be surprised if The FreeSpace Campaign Restoration Project team aren't looking for someone to play a few missions and spot problems. They must all be getting a bit sick of Warzone by now. :)
-
YOU ARE NOW HLP'S NUMBER 1 TOP POSTER!!! :D
Congratulations, Karajorma!! :D
-
Now Kara is all master of all.
-
Bug/play testing.
Could give that a try, thanks Karajorma. I remember the old Warzone - didn't get very far with it.
I suppose you have to be pretty good at playing games for playtesting purposes. I'd probably have lower the difficulty to very easy just to get through the campaign quickly enough.

1) Congratulations! You kicked aldo's a*s!
2) Yeah, we need someone. I'm actually busy. In fact, I'm either doing-nothing, spamming or working on INFA and I have a WIP cutscene for Warzone. We'll need playtesters, but not for Warzone I think. The campaign has already been tested. :)

It takes a while, but it's actually quite simple and easy...and a powerfull tool to boot.
Don't worry about it, jsut experiment with it a bit and you'll be a pro FREDer in no time :D
