Title: Trouble with installer
Post by: Talhoe on August 25, 2007, 08:30:41 pm
Before I start with the topic, there is a question I need to ask.

Does the FS2 campaign only have 10 missions?

If the answer is yes, then I have nothing more to say

If the answer is no, then Tureys installer gave me a corrupt install, and I need help in finding the files that are missing.

Details details.

Im running a 3.2gh with 1gb ram.

After mission 10, I think.... Capella last evacuation. The mission does not go to debrief when I complete the mission, and I am forced to redo the mission, and the five fail trick takes me to the flight deck, and ends the campaign

Did you download the movie files?

What was the name of the last mission?

I downloaded the minimum, the first 2 items on your list.  All of the core files and the open installer. I did not think I needed the extras. The last mission I get does not have a briefing, its a transmission directly from the last mission. Evacualte Capella in 15 minutes. Its the one where you collapse the Vega node

There are in reality over 30 missions in the main campaign so something is indeed wrong.

And, out of curiosity, what missions were you able to play?

I got to 70th blue lions. not too many missions after that. Collapse epilon pegasi node... and the Vega one after, then it crashes. Not even the 5 failures trick works here. [fail a mission 5 times, you get the option to skip it.]

Can you follow the "Posting your FS2 directory contents" instructions in my sig, and post it here?

So basically you've missed like two thirds of the campaign and the storyline. And on top of that the ending is now spoiled for you. Not good. I'd advise you to redownload at least Root_fs2.vp if not all the core files.

Or you could check my sig and download FS2MainCampaignWithLSNebulae.7z, then extract it to preferrably .../FreeSpace/mediavps. Then use the launcher to select the mediavps folder as your MOD and you should be ready. The file's original purpose is to apply LightSpeed's funky lookin' nebulae in to the main campaign missions but it will work without them. The main point is that it contains the mission files.

If you simply delete FreeSpace2/Installer/installedversions.txt and run the installer again, it'll re-download any corrupt files.

No, the ending is not spoiled for me, yet. I just get dumped to flight deck and I am forced to replay the mission.

Turey. The installer says all files are up to date and installs nothing.

That's really disturbing, the root vp is the right size. Try making a new pilot and playing the campaign again.

1. In any case there are events in the campaign that will now be most unsurprising to you since you've played some of the last missions.

2. What the hell is Sp5TTIntXP.Msm?

3. Try Turey's instructions. He's the one behind the installer, after all.

4. If you have even a half-decent rig, download the mediavps and the FS2MainCampaignWithLSNebulae.7z. The game will then blow your mind.

Even with a second pilot, it is the same.

If I stay, I die.
If I escape, I get tossed to flight deck, and I am forced to do it again.
If I bail [jump out early] I get the message "No debrief for s3-10.fs2"

Hmm... I did similar, using the simulator. I went into that mission, and failed it on purpose, and it gave me a no debrief message.

I have played the game enough times, to beat it twice, if there are 30 missions.

Meh... might as well find another campaign and play that, so I have something to do, or I could go back to NWN2. I never took that game very far, it seems.

There are ~30 missions total (not counting training missions), but sm3-10.fs2 IS the last mission. For some reason, you're skipping 2/3ds of the campaign.

hrmmmm.

Try going to the mission simulator and hitting ctrl-shift-s and seeing if it'll show you all the missions.

I will list the missions I have in the simulator.
hmm... yea it is thirty missions total, and yet, it feels like so much is missing.... so many loose ends.

Then I will just get a new campaign I guess. The last mission is "Clash of the titans II", or is there more?

The last mission is Apocalypse.

If you download the video files, it'll explain a bit more.

I downloaded the video files, and the last mission I get is clash of titans. I am missing something here...

Well, technically the last mission is Apocalypse, but it is actually kind of like the second part for Clash of the Titans II. It is the mission that starts with the red alert screen (Incoming transmission). Furthermore, if your campaign worked, you'd be playing three training missions at the beginning. If you've never seen any training missions, you can be sure that you've missed something.

Since you seem to have the mission files, I'd suspect that your actual campaign file is broken or something. I don't know. You could try the following: once again, check the Useful stuff for FSO link in my sig, download FreeSpace2.fc2 from there and place it in .../Freespace/data/missions. Hopefully that will fix it.

Also, another explanation came to my mind. How are you running FreeSpace? You do know that you have to either run Launcher.exe and click Run from the Launcher itself, or run fs2_open_3_6_9.exe, right? If you are trying to start the game with FreeSpace2.exe or FS2.exe, there will likely be problems.

@Turey: Would the installedversions.txt in the \temp directory interfere with the installedversions.txt in the \Installer directory?

An idea came to mind. Perhaps the reason I am missing something is that I am litterally missing something, namely the cutscenes. Then again, I beat the campaign in only 2 days, so that may seem why it feels so short.

You constantly state that you think the campaign is short. Several of your posts seem to imply that you've only been able to play the last third of the campaign. Please keep in mind that there are over thirty missions.

Have you played all of them? Started in a training session, where the instructor tells you which button is for the afterburner and which is for the weapons? Fought the NTF? Encountered the Shivans for the first in 32 years? Explored the mysterious nebula beyond Gamma Draconis? Slain the Ravana? Crushed the NTF? Participated in the officer exchange program, serving in a Vasudan battle group for a while? Encountered the SJ Sathanas? Crapped your pants when the Sathanas started to move to GTVA space, threatening the survival of the people in Capella? Assisted the Colossus in defeating the Sathanas?

If you've never even heard of those events, you should really get the damn thing working and then play the campaign, before stating that  the campaign is too short and that there are loads of loose ends.

Seriously, I hope that you've at least tried the actions that have been presented to you. I'm sure one of them will eventually make things work again.

Nope.

If I didn't know better I'd swear he had a copy of one of the fixed campaign files I used to post for people who had a pilot error and wanted to restart the campaign at Bearbaiting.

@Talhoe : You should get the cutscenes. The plotline of the last mission will make a lot more sense then.
