Title: The Snail's Leaving
Post by: Snail on August 28, 2007, 12:06:38 pm
Yes. The Snail is leaving.

I just found out that they decided to block HLP from the server. So I won't be able to access HLP (or GW I think) for basically all the time until next Christmas, and then again until next summer, starting tomorrow. I'll be able to access the internet on certain weekends and possibly Fridays if the library computer is working. Good news: You won't see me. Bad news: INFASA, AIII and MT may be held up because of this.

Oh, they also blocked SG... Basically all the places I go on.

I found I could sneak past works blockades by using a link in an email (PM notification, for example)........ :nervous:

Who are "they?"

The masters of the school internet.

I found I could sneak past works blockades by using a link in an email (PM notification, for example)........ :nervous:

Well they'll be on to me since I was using my own network for a while to bypass them, but then they found me out.

they

Care to elaborate? ISP, school admins, Chinese internet police, mafia family from Palermo, or perhaps you meant THEM! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/THEM!_(comics)), THEM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/THEM_(Marvel_universe)), or perhaps even Them! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Them!) or Them (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Them_(2006_film)).

...ah, too slow, so your school admins decided to do... WHAT? :mad2:

It's time to call in the heavy artillery, methinks. Before retorting to A-10 CAS flights sweeping those blocks away.

I don't really know what's going on and where, but if its not something too sophisticated, you should be able to enter the forums from, say, proxify.com (http://proxify.com/), and you might also want to take a look at XeroBank Browser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XeroBank_Browser) which is essentially Firefox with a twist that makes it connect the host server via onion networks that effectively mask IP's here and there, which means that even if HLP/GW server for some incredible reason is blocked by the ISP, it should be circumvented by XeroBank (previously known as Torpark) because the data doesn't really seem to be coming from HLP/GW server. And, the great thing is that you don't need to install XeroBank on your PC so you don't need admin rights. You can run it from, say, USB-stick. Or your home directory, which works somewhat faster.

It's slower than regular browsing, but should work to some extent...

If it's browser specific filter/limitation, you might want to use a portable Firefox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Firefox_-_Portable_Edition) installation without the XeroBAnk's Torpark connection system.

...of course, all this applies on your school's Windows PC's. If they only use Unix, your last best hope would be proxify.com, but I wouldn't hold my breath there. And uploading/downloading files via that would not work (apart from those text files [tables in this context] that can be copy-pasted).

...Why are they doing this?

And don't you have net connection at your home? :nervous:

A challenge! Here is what you do: sneak into the computer lab at night and take all the mice and keyboard cords and switch them to other computers. Also, unplug the network cables. While you're there, you could just install linux/not whatever OS they use on every single computer, too I guess.

Now I don't exactly know how this will help you contact HLP, but it sounds fun.

You know, you could always ask why they blocked the site.  Is it just the classrooms/labs that have been blocked, or is it the entire network?  I could see the reasoning behind limiting classrooms and labs, but it'd be absurd to unconditionally block the entire network.

My school now has a 100mb dl limit/week - used to be unlimited :(

Counts MB through the server or something

Now I can't download large files, and it's amazing how fast MB's can get used up in sites like HLP - but I can use the MB sparingly...

Ever heard of Your HomeTM? :wtf:

I'm at a boarding school so the connection is everywhere in the school.

HOWEVER, the school is using a different connection on Mondays, Fridays and the weekends which is much less ****ed up, (DON'T ask me why I can't even begin to fathom why) so I'll be able to access on those days (well not Monday since I will be far away from my computer).

But, of course... I'll be less active. :blah:

Holy ****... he has 13.7 posts per day

Akenbosch has around 20, but that number is slowly declining. ;)

My school got a program called NetSweeper. At first it blocked HLP and then it allowed it. After a while the school board put it on the local deny list for their network.
