Title: Power supply woes
Post by: brozozo on August 29, 2007, 08:25:14 pm
Dear HLP,

My power supply died. I guess I forgot to ground myself when I was cleaning out some dust. Oh, well. I need a new one. I'm clueless about power supplies, and I'm looking for some advice. Keep in mind, I'm a poor college student again.

Also, does anyone know of any cheap (or free) and reliable backup solutions?

As for backup,

1. burn DVDs
2. buy an external hard disk.

As for power supplies, IDK; I'd be interested to know myself.  I know you don't want the cheap ones; but I'm not too familiar with the brand names TBH.

The Seasonic S12+ and S12II are good PSUs. Not very flashy, but they work solidly and stably.

Cheapest way to backup is still to buy a big-enough USB HD and dump everything on that. Or DVD's if you have the patience...

The Corsair HX520 (rebadged Seasonic) seems to be the best overall option right now. You can get it for $80 at Buy.com if you do the rebate and use Google Checkout. The Enhance ENP-5150GH at ewiz is another good one, but it has gone up in price recently.

I'd say a Seasonic S12 or a Thermaltake Purepower. The Seasonic S12 is a better quality PSU, though the Thermaltake Purepower isn't so shabby and costs a bit less for similar wattage.

It would be nice to have a PSU embedded into a UPS device.  That way it could receive a direct +12V supply and not have to worry about rails.  Imagine a system running a quad SLI'd 8800GTX without stressing the PSU :D.

i just blew up a psu yesterday. bought it to replace the dying psu in my old rig (and i mean old, a p4 2.4ghz chip one of the early ones, a gutter-level geforce 4, and 256 megs of bad ram). it was used and i bought it at state surplus for about 5 bucks. i hooked it up right and booted. sence it worked i started taking apart the old psu. opened it up, discharged the caps and disconnected the fan. i soldered the fan to an old molex i wasnt using so i could hook it up for a quick test. now sanity dictates that i turn off the machine *before* plugging in the fan. now we all know nuke is not a man of sanity, so i lazily hook the thing up to my new cheap psu. that was a hell of a light show, fortunately i didnt die. unfortunately the psu and possibly the computer were dead. and sence i jad just dismanteled the other psu (had destructively de-soldered some useful components), i didnt have a spare i could use to test. oh well, i still got 3 computers left. i just hope i didnt fry my laptop drives (adapted for tower with hot clue gun + adapter)/wireless network card. i have uses for those.
