Title: Heavy Cruiser Sketch-Up WIP
Post by: BrotherBryon on August 31, 2007, 06:00:40 pm
Here is my second Sketch-up model. One of these days I'm going to sit down and learn how to do the rest of the stuff needed to get one of these in game but I got a bit much on my plate right now. Until that time I will continue working on models in Sketch-up when I get the time.

Damnit, this ship reminds the hell out of me of something else but I'll be damned if I can place it.

Nice design though.

Nice, kinda reminds me of a Beam-Frigate from Homeworld.

The inspiration for the overall shape came from the Agressor class destroyer in Forces of Corruption.

Reminds me of some of the ship designs from the Angels Fall First Universe. Nice job :)

For some reason, the Pillar of Autumn and USS Sulaco, should they ever spawn a demon bast**d child. Thats what popped into my head.......

Its a compliment though, trust me on that

***Update***

I worked in some more detail, mostly in the trench between the upper and lower sections. I'm at a loss as to what to do next, any suggestions?

Add turrets. Then texture and convert that mother****er.

It looks like you've gotten all the detail you need. :)

Looks to me like a "newer" version of the PoA. But, then again, when my mind's not on Freespace, it's on Halo.

@ Cobra, I've never done any of those things before so it would take me a while to figure it all out but thanks for the vote of confidence. The only reason I put this thread in the Fan Fiction and Art section and not Freespace Modding is because I didn't know if I would take it that far. I got a steep learning curve to conquer first. The model currently sits at 14272 edges and 5895 faces (Not sure how that translates into polys).

Definetely Homeworld 2 cruiser...

I was playing with sketchup, talk about making greeble easily.  I wish Max had a plugin that did this.

I've never played any of the home world games, so I wouldn't know.

@Hellstryker Sketch-Up is surprisingly easy to learn the basics. I just downloaded and started playing around with it a couple of months ago.

Edit: after playing with it some, i take that back  doing simple things is good in sketchup, but anything beyond that is actually slower than max.
Is there a way to select subobjects?
Title: Re: Heavy Cruiser Sketch-Up WIP
Post by: BrotherBryon on October 08, 2007, 04:34:50 pm
I think Sketch-Up calls those components and they are accessible in the window tab

You have to select what you want to group, right click, and make it a group. That'll make it a sub-object in the heirarchy. Components are different - basically they allow you to copy one subobject over and over and when you edit one of them, it edits all of the others. As for the program; it's powerful, but you have to just hide some of the more complex mesh parts when you're working. It's a downside, but worth it IMO.

If anyone here needs help with using Sketchup for making game models, I've got experience with it, I can help you :) Also, another word of warning - all those little greebles should be made into subobjects before you export (you can make the greebles one object). The reason being is that when you draw on a face and then push/pull it out, you're basically drawing an extrusion, which eats up polies like you wouldn't believe. When you group them and remake the face without the extrusion, it saves lots of polies.

Thanks UT, any advice you can give is most appreciated. I suppose I should go back and start grouping things. Would you group anything you used the push/pull tool on (Used very heavily in this model) or just where there is a lot of detail? This will be the first model I attempt to put in game, if I can figure everything out. Maybe I should start with something a little simpler, like a flying box just to make sure I get the mechanics right. Anyway here is another updated pic. Every time I take a step back and then come back to it later I end up adding a bunch of detail.

That is an almost exact replica of the Aggressor for FoC.

Very nice!

This thing is eventually going to need a name, and no I'm not calling it the GTC Bast**d.

On a more serious note. After I finish grouping sub-objects is there anything else I should do before trying to convert? Also it looks like I'm going to have a good number of sub-objects, is that a good or bad thing?

I take it I'm going to have to recreate all these faces

Well if the polycount is low enough as is and you're not obsessive, you don't necessarily have to :p I might do it with some of the more complex objects though (like any of the rounded bits), just to save some extra polies.

Hmm Truespace crashes every time I try to import it. Didn't have that problem before I did the grouping, so something is wrong.

Post by: Unknown Target on October 18, 2007, 11:00:23 am
Make sure that you remade your faces underneath the grouped objects - hide the grouped object and make sure the face below it is a flat plane (sometimes it stays the same as before you grouped it, so it has the outline of the extruded shape still in it).

Sorry I've been away for a while, real life has been rather busy lately. I can export the model with all the groups hidden but if I export it with the groups unhidden truespace chokes on it. Once I get it into truespace is there any thing I need to do with it or do I just convert it to cob and use other programs for mapping? Truespace seems like it may be a bit difficult to learn so I may not have the time to mess with it further for a while.

You can actually use Sketchup to map if you'd like, I have a tutorial SKP file that I made on how to do it, if you'd like.

That would be great

I got a week from hell this week as far as schooling goes but no classes next week so maybe I can spend some time on this.

I really haven't had a chance to work with it yet. I ran through the tutorial (Nicely put together by the way) and realize how much work it's going to be with this particular model.  I didn't design this model with the thought of mapping and texturing it in mind. That and I'm going to need Photoshop or some other editor. I'm no artist so I'm not sure what kind of textures I'll be able to come up with. I do most of my modeling at work (provided my work and school load isn't too heavy) while monitoring systems at night. So any texture work will need to be done at home where I have little time these days for anything outside of home maintenance (Ah the joys of home ownership). I started a new model last night that will incorporate some the lessons learned from this one. I'm really liking the new model and I'm debating on either posting a pic in this thread or starting a new thread. At this time I don't think I have the skill to correct the issues and put the GTC Bast@rd in game but if any one wants to try their hand at converting it let me know.

I still may do a higher poly version once I figure out how everything is done, but for my first time I wanted to start off a little simpler. Progress from this point on is going to be slow. I need to obtain a copy of photoshop and then learn how to use it. That and exams are just over a week away.
