Is this supposed to be in General Discussion or is this about something Freespace related?

He's testing us! He's a Shivan spy trying to confuse our minds so our fleets will be distorted when the third Shivan incursion begins.

He probably posted in the wrong forum. Maybe it's somekind of eerie mind trick.

I choice the 2 by 4 because it's the only object that will always be a rectangle.

Yup, meant to say, I'm inclined to agree with Gamma Draconis, a 2 x 4 is the only object that has a fixed dimension ;)

It was supposed to be something related to those "Which ship is more Sci-Fi?" threads.  It's just now that I'm not ready to fall over on my desk and go to sleep, it's not as funny.

rectangle (noun): A four-sided plane figure with four right angles. [French, from Medieval Latin rectangulum, a right triangle, from Late Latin rectiangulum : Latin rectus, right; see reg- in Indo-European roots + Latin angulus, angle.]

rectangular (adjective): Right-angled. An object or plane figure which only has right angles (90 degrees, or pi/2 rad if you prefer). However, theterm is also used as in the olden phrase "rectangular triangle", more commonly known as right-angled triangle (which of course only has one right angle, what with being a triangle and all).

...aanyway, all cubes are rectangular, but not all rectangular objects are cubes. A cube is an object that is both rectangular and all it's sides have same length. Thus the question that sets the poll is a bit strange - if you're looking for a cube, the word "rectangular" is completely redundant. :p

Or a cube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube), for that matter.

Dear aken, if you really have a cube shaped microwave, please tell me where you got it from. I want one too.

something i learned in 3ds grade math class: a square is a rectangle with sides all equal. for some reason epople thought that was so special they gave it its own name. but yes, it still counts as a rectangle.

directly quoted from my 3d grade math teacher.  ;)

That's like saying that a triangle is three lines that meet each other at ends, but people thought it special enough to give it it's own name... :nervous:
