Is the multiplayer aspect of freespace over looked:
can you guys incorperate new types of multiplayer games,
Capture the cargo pod
Team deathmatch
Co-op freespace missions
and devlope new things to do in multiplayer like a vidieo connection to other players, and power ups that spawn sporadicly.
-
seems to be all those game modes could be done now with proper fredding.
-
Eh? #2 and #3 are already there. There are like 50 coop missions including a coop campaign and 10 or so TvT missions among the validated missions. And #1 would be easy enough to FRED, though you wouldn't get stats for it obviously since it wouldn't be validated.
-
cant there be some sort of secret mission validating council so that new missions can be validated?
-
I agree there will have to be one, eventually. But I think multiplayer needs to pick up some steam first. That's happening already, it's actually starting to get common seeing a new face pop into a game, but it's still slow going. Need a good base of regular players before it's really worth the hassle of playtesting new missions as rigorously as validation would require.

If only we could pay for advertising... :nervous:
Because every body likes a good online game..
Like *Cough*FreeLancer*Cough*. :nervous:

SoL is already working on this.

i think FRED zone does, but they want any missions you make to fit in with canon (BAH! the ntf deserves ares fighters)
-
Find me someone from FREDZone who is still around and I might believe you on that point.
And quite simply the reason why the SCP has overlooked the multiplayer game is because for many years the multiplayer players overlooked us. Now that this is changing there is more chance of getting the SCP to work on fixing things.

still hold a grudge against all of the toms build players :D
-
Not really. But it does irk me when people say that no one pays attention to multiplayer after I spent over a year screaming why people should be paying attention to multiplayer. :)
-
Kara's right, we had to put up with a LOT of 'Use Tom's build!' posts, which seriously hampered the efforts to properly test and expand the multiplayer options. Yes, Multiplay had problems, it still has problems, but people are starting to see the results of what was planned for it now.
-
No need to ever use that build any more. Been playing a lot lately, and it's quite rare to encounter an error. There are more bugs in the missions than in the code, that's for sure :p Only thing that's severely missing is in-game joining, since we keep getting spammed with "xxx attempted to join" messages while playing only to find them all gone once we actually finish the game because they lack the patience to wait.
And there is actually beginning to be a lot of people playing, enough so that we've gone over the player limit several times lately.
[Edit] PS. Whoever kept ramming my poor Perseus with an Ursa in one of the games tonight, if you read this, look where you're driving :p

I'm still here. :p But yes, we would need a lot more active players for anything like this to be worth the effort.

Yeah, ingame joining would be extremely useful. I think once we get that working along with dedicated servers and the old lobby, multiplayer activity will pick up sharply.

Might have been akenbosch. He was doing quite a few screwy things. :p
-
I was thinking that, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to say it :p
Oh, and not having ever played on the old PXO, how was the old lobby? Mainly, did it include a chat? That's one other thing I'm missing, being able to chat while not being in a game.

Yeah, it is just a chat session basically.
But the PXO lobby will be back with 3.6.10, so it's not really something to simply wish for at this point.
-
Looking forward to it. I really miss the PXO lobby of old times.

Ok here is my idea.....
make a frespace Instant messanging programme that tells the user who is on line and what version of FS there using, also you could have a status indicator (away, busy, online, InGame, WantToPlayFS-MP) it could double as a chat room now that the IRC is down...

http://www.xfire.com <--- We can post in the Xfire forums to add FreeSpace SCP support if it's not there already. Xfire is exactly the type of program you are referring to. I love its in-game overlay chat feature and I think it would perfectly compliment the future PXO lobby.
-
I agree but X-fire is buggy to say the least (maybe its just me using Vista)
what about teamspeak its much easer to use and it can be incorperated in to the website, look at the Battlefield clan website i am in.

-
i think, xfire is far too buggy (hangs at least 1 time a day, and i'm using XP), but creating an IM is also quite a lot of work (escpecially, if it should work properly)
but it would be nice ;)
-
Hmm, i am creating my own Teamspeak Server, but i cant get the damn thing working has anyone else incountered this problem, (Teamspeaks FAQ is usless, and the people on there forum are rude) the server is displayed but i cant access it via Teamspeak Client the name of the server is FreespaceTeamspeak
are there any plans to impliment a VOIP chat thing in FS multiplayer, or will this cause to much lag
