Keep in mind, we aren't thinking of creating Half Life 2 here, no ones shelling out $10,000 to use UT3 or id Tech 5 engine, no one is going to take the time to make it look like F.E.A.R. As a low to no budget operation the worst thing anyone could do is expect something like that.I hate myself)
The most advanced open source game I'm aware of is Nexuiz (http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/index.php) which uses the Darkplaces (http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/) engine (don't be turned off because it's Quake 1 based, so is the Doom 3 engine).
Examples:
Darkplaces (http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/k/KiloKrash/100651/trflqamvns.jpg) (Nexuiz)
Quake 3 (http://tremulous.net/screenshots/) (Tremulous)

another engine, prefferrably with a "flight mode" where you hop into your fighter for fs style combat.
-
Kinda stupid to try to have FS2 style combat when pretty much everyone who has played it has tried FS2 though. It's always going to suffer hugely in comparison to the original so why bother?
-
yeah i usually want vehicle fun in my games, but i think it would be a better idea to keep from the skies.
as for the engine, i don't really care, which ever gets the job done the easiest!
Single player!!!!!!!! thats what i'd wannt most!

EDIT: I believe Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (http://www.splashdamage.com/?page_id=14) used the Q3A engine as well?

Unreal Tournament 2k4 or 3 if you're feeling masochistic.

We don't need an open source engine to do this sort of thing, just an existing game with good mod support and editing tools. What we could really use is some of the original cutscene content, like the Vasudan and Shivan models.
-
Yup, I suppose the only advantage of an Open Source engine is that you don't need to own the original game to play it.
I've had a go at animating a Shivan model before, it's not an easy task in the slightest, I ended up giving up, partly because, as I think :v: discovered, they don't look 'realistic' when they move, and partly because Poser sucks eggs when it comes to animating new models, or at least, it did for me.

Make a SWBFII mod?
-
How about FS2-BF2142? That's what First Strike (http://www.firststrikemod.com/us/) is doing...
-
What engine does Enemy territory: Quake Wars use? I heard that was a good one.
-
ET:QW uses a more developed version of the Doom 3 (id Tech 4) engine, which costs more than I make in a year
Yes most free fps I know of are based off of Quake 3; I only gave one example per engine. All of them have several games that use them.
Is the UT2k4 engine available?

Battlefield 1942 may be the most modded game in history. It's not open source, but like someone asked for, it has tons of good modelling tools. The game engine would be well-suited for FS style conflict (open warfare as opposed to tournament matches or covert ops). Creating a FS mod in BF1942 would be as simple as coming up with a few new models for Vasudans, Shivans and Hallfight-looking Terrans. Plus a few new levels, if you aren't happy with a simple desert or city landscape.
I really fail to see, however, what would be so original or great about an FreeSpace FPS. Probably the only cool thing would be seeing Vasudan and Shivan melee skills (although that would be very awesome in itself). There are plenty of other sci-fi shooters out there.
