heres my idea....
can a mission be made where the player ship gets destroyed in mission and then...
....the de-briefing screen kicks in saying somthing like "we picked up your life pod in space, bla bla bla" and the mission falks in two directions depending if you survive or not.
in the current fred i dont think this is possable, am i wrong?

You can probably FRED it. Use ship-guardian to prevent Alpha 1 from dying, if in fact it works on Alpha 1, and keep checking to see if Alpha 1's health reaches 1%. If it does you can fade to black and use end-mission. Or if you want to be a smart arse you could swap the position of Alpha 1's ship for that of an identical ship which you could blow up and watch using the cutscene sexps. You can't destroy alpha 1's ship though. If you do that, no debriefing.

What would be iiiinteresting, though, would be if you were put on a hopeless mission (again!) died, saw your ship exploding, then faded into black.
...then fade in a cutscene of a Shivan Medlab. You look at yourself, and see a heavily burned torso without any limbs attached, being pushed onto conveyor belt. You pass out and later wake up finding that you now have five limbs, laser in your head and cool energy claws. And you speak in 1337 radio bursts.
And it's time to pay back to the command.
...Hey, I figured what the Shivans' motive is. :drevil:

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. (It was actually Axem who suggested this one to me a while back but it does appear to work). The trick is to get the mission to end before the restart popup menu appears.

In fact, if you die in Apocalypse and wait long enough, you'll get the "Alpha 1 stayed behind to defend Capella and died" movie. Although you won't be able to progress in the campaign.
Nothing changes when you die, other than that you can't control your ship and can't recieve messages. All other SEXPs and FRED features still apply.

Didn't Colonel Decker do a mission once where you got destroyed and ended up in an escape pod?

Yeah. Kinda surprising isn't it? :D But I've actually used that in a BtRL mission and it does work.

AFAIK you don't die in Apocalypse. When the supernova reaches the right section the game simply goes into cutscene playing mode. That's very different from the game moving into "the player is dead" mode. For a start that stuff is hardcoded and will only work when the campaign has a certain filename (i.e only for the main FS2 campaign and nothing else).

I think he means in a more normal sense, like got whacked by some Dragons, and then just sit and watch long enough.

The only other thing to make note of is that you have about 3-4 seconds before the "Dead Player Menu" pops up, so 3 is the biggest delay you can use.
