Title: Freespace 1 full version download
Post by: k19 on September 09, 2007, 02:54:49 am
Is there any download site that has a free Freespace 1 full version download because i have the demo and can't find it in stores i do have freespace 2 but still it would be good to have both.

FS1 isn't freeware so there aren't sny legal download sites for it. Just download Turey's FSO Installer (look in my sig) and play FSPort. That way you can play FS1 with all the FS2 and FSO goodness.

If the Installer refuses to download FSPort, just get it manually. Go to the FSPort site (http://fsport.hard-light.net) and to the downloads section. I just tried myself and you can download at least from FSMods. Fileplanet might work as well.

What happens in the installer? Do you get any error messages?

FS1 isn't freeware so there aren't sny legal download sites for it.

FS2 isn't freeware either. :p

Seriously, it really isn't.

Yea but between the two, FS1 is more illegal to download, because the source for that isn't open :p

Anyway, if you can't find it, just grab the FSPort. :)

Then again the company that published it bit the dust a couple of years ago and had its office locked up by the state of California. I think they have bigger things to worry about then warez copies of a 10 years old game that they didn't really care about anyway.

Let's not turn this into another discussion about Interplay please. But they are still around and apparently are moving slowly out of debt.

True. But I've created my own moral code: If it's in HotU, downloading it is legal enough.

I found the ISO over at Hades Combine and i downloaded it. I have one problem.though, I use Daemon to mount the image and i get the game running. when i click to proceed to the missions the load screen comes up and then freezes. so i reboot and try it again and it always freezes at the same spot. is there something I'm doing something wrong or is it a bad download?

Simple solution: Download Turey's FSO Installer (found for example in my sig), download FSO with it and play FSPort.

FS1 isn't freeware so there aren't sny legal download sites for it.

Not even illegal. Out of curiosity, I just did a Google search on that and came up with only one result, with S/L of 1/25. And it's 1.67 GB, for some reason, which makes me a little wary of whether it's FS1 or not. A lot of torrents about this "FreeSpace Battle Pack", whatever that is.

Did you use Toorgle (http://www.toorgle.com/)?  And, did you search for Descent: FreeSpace and Conflict: FreeSpace?  How about FreeSpace: The Great War?

Thanks for your help out of interest is a torrent the same as a download.

P.S. Thanks jr2 for giving be the Toorgle version of Google.

A torrent is a p2p download, using the BitTorrent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent) protocol.  You will need a BitTorrent client to use them.  I recommend [url=http://www.utorrent.com/]uTorrent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client); if you need more help (eg, with port forwarding), let me know.

The Battle Pack is either FS1 and ST bundled or FS1 and 2 bundled.

It couldn't be FS 1 + 2 unless they were (or at least FS2 was) stripped - down versions.

The White Label re-release carried both games in a multi CD pack. It's possible someone could have ripped that. But seeing as how the Battlepack was the official name used for the FS1 and Silent Threat release it's most likely that.

1) You don't want to use FS1 + ST via the SCP or FS2 Retail FSPort?  If you do, I can give you a link to FSPort.

2) Do you know how to use Toorgle (http://www.toorgle.com)?  How about Bittorrent (http://www.utorrent.com)?  You might need help forwarding your ports (http://www.portforward.com) if you use Bittorrent.

True.  Unless you want to only use Retail, which I strongly suggest against.

The method in the FAQ is more for retail than FSO. FSO introduced a texture replacement system which makes things much easier.

A note to the members of Something Awful Forums
Hello, my name is Turey, and I wrote the FreeSpace Open Installer. All of you at Something Awful seem to have taken quite an interest in both FreeSpace Open and my Installer. I'm always glad to see more people become interested in FreeSpace Open, but the addition of the SA traffic to the normal traffic has caused a problem for one of the file hosts that the Installer relies on. As such, the retail files and the Derelict mod campaign have been temporarily removed from the Installer.

I understand that this is inconvenient, but it has to be done. In the meantime, here's an alternative method of downloading. If you download the HotU Version (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4150), then run my Installer on top of it, it should result in an almost identical install to what you would have gotten with the retail files in my Installer. If you're looking for Derelict, you can get it from Hades-Combine (http://hades-combine.com/web/index.php?ind=downloads&op=entry_view&iden=302).

Thank you for your cooperation, and I hope you enjoy playing FreeSpace Open.

Ya.... I use SP2; you have to set Compatibility mode... right-click on the \games\freespace\freespace.exe file, go to compatibility, and set it for Windows '95.  (I use Win '98 mode, but I've heard some ppl get problems with that.)

Oh, and, if you want, you can use a Glide Wrapper to get 3DFX Glide in the setup screen for video (instead of D3D).  zeckensack's Glide wrapper (http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/index.html).

See also zeckensack's supported Games list (http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/readme.htm#games); note that you should enable Application specific overrides in the configurator, so that zeckensack's FreeSpace optimizations will work.  Then just re-run 'Setup' from the FreeSpace Launcher.

If so we go back to square one: finding a website that has the free download of the full verison of freespace 1 retail.

I'll sort it out when I get home; give me 3 - 4 hours.

EDIT: Look in here for retail torrents (http://www.isohunt.com/torrents/freespace?ihp=1&iht=-1&ihs1=4&iho1=d).  However, if you want SCP (including FSPort & a ton of mods), I can tell you for certain that this (http://www.torrentbox.com/torrent_details?id=95670) torrent works; I put that torrent up, and I'm still seeding it... currently, there are 4 seeders and 4 "Leechers" (downloaders, but with Bittorrent, downloaders also upload :D ).  hip63 made this disc; the only thing is; after you install it, then you must rename the \freespace2\fs1_port_3 directory to \freespace2\fsport .  Additionally, the patch to version 1.01 of the DVD can be found in my signature.

Well, I'll have to run FS1 without the Compatibility mode and see... it could be its only FS2 Retail that has a problem... plus, I'm using a different computer than when I started (started with a Gigabyte GA-6BXD dual processor 500 MHz PIII and 512 MB RAM, with first a 3DFX Voodoo 3 w/ 16 MB, then upgraded to a BFG "Asylum" FX 5200 OC 256 MB... then my little bro stepped on the video out cable plugged into the computer :/ )

I also get the afterburner bug, and it goes away with compatibility mode.

Also, FS1 should be played in software mode. It actually looks better than both D3D and Glide, and modern processors can easily handle it at maxed framerates.

...Better than Glide?   I thought that Glide was supposed to be the best-looking.  Without acceleration, I thought some features were turned off, even if the processor can handle it.  Else software mode would be quite impossible on the older machines... correct?

Ya, that was a few years ago.... I'd thought he toasted the computer, so I got a new one.  Come to find out, when the monitor went blank (from being unplugged), I guess he reached in back to "fix" it, and threw the voltage selector from 110 to 220 volts, so the compy was only getting half power.  Since I didn't change the voltage selector, and couldn't imagine a sane reason to, I didn't find out until after I'd gotten a nice new MSI 6750E (aka K7N2 Delta2 Platinum) with an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ with a BFG 6200 LE OC GFX card.  ;7

Title: Re: Freespace 1 full version download

"Leechers" are people like you, who don't have a full copy yet... they can share what they have with you, but if there's not at least one "seeder", then eventually you will all have the same amount of information, and transfers will cease until someone with the entire torrent connects again (if they do).  Do make sure you wait at least 10-20 mins before discarding a torrent, though, as sometimes it takes awhile for you to find all of the seeders / leechers.  If there are no seeders, then ditch it.  BTW, have you at least tried the SCP torrent in my sig?  (hip63's one)  I absolutely positively know that one works, because I'm seeding it 24/7! :p  If it doesn't, then you have a problem with your connection... visit www.portforward.com with your router make / model # handy, and look for how to 1) set up a static IP with your router, not your ISP, and also how to forward your port.
