Title: FSPort Crash "weapon error"

This happens just after you escort the Galetea through an asteroid belt, it will not continue to the next briefing. I just get:

Make sure that you have no mods installed in your FSport folder.

Oh, and,

Thanks for the welcome! And by mods you mean other player-made campains I wonder?

Also, I've been trying to play the Derelict campaign on a separate installation of the game (I made two, one for 1port and one for 2open) and can only get to the second level. It wants me to press '1' to have a 'squadmate deploy a bouy'. Well, I have tried unbinding '1', the '1' on both my gamepad and keyboard (it's a laptop so no numpad) and neither will work or respond. Any suggestions for that one?

You don't need to have two installs.

It looks to me like you have FSport installed in your main FS2 directory.

Tell me, how did you install the game.

Post your directory contents (both of the directories) using this (http://tinyurl.com/2my5au).

Ok, moving the mods to another folder worked. I separated the fs2 programs into open (2) and port (1) so I could use a different .exe short cut on my start menu for the two of them, as well as have the correct opening cutseen and menu art selection for either game, as the port overwrote those no matter wich campain I was running. The campain is now working, though the trainer mission for the Intercepter missils isn't showing missils, though I thing another post has something on that. Thanks for your help.

I wonder, does the online function still work? keeps telling me I need to run the program setup (launcher) to use it, but it wants me to select my video card, yet no options are available in its pull down list. any advice there?

If you have the FS2 cutscenes in your root Freespace directory and the FS1 cutscenes in your FSPort folder, they should work correctly. Meaning, when you play FS2 (with mediavps as mod or no mod), FS2 cutscenes will be played, and when playing "FS1" (with FSPort as mod), the FS1 cutscenes will be played.

As for the training mission, you can find a fixed version for it in the Useful stuff for FSO link in my sig. Just extract it to your FSPort/data/missions folder.

You don't need two different .EXEs. The launcher allows you to select mods with a click of the mouse. If you wanted to have two shortcuts you could have used a batch file using something like "C\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe" -mod fsport.

To go online read this (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267). A schedule of games is available here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,49012.0.html).

One problem, the launcher is useless. It wont let me select my video card and thus won't continue from there...

btw, how the heck do you get cheats to work? All I can find is "type - www.volition-inc.com" , well, where do you type it? wont work in menu, wont work in-mission... ???

If it doesn't recognize your video card already you must have screwed something up in the (video card) install.

The cheats for FSPort are the same as FS2.

You just go into a mission and type "www.freespace2.com" (without quotations). Don't mind if com menus pop up and guns switch.

The cheats are as followed:

Hold "~" (without quotations) and type the cheat to get it's corresponding function:

~+w     Unlimited missiles and gun energy.
~+i       Invincibility.
~+k      Kill your target.
~+Alt+Shift+k     Do 10% damage to your target regardless of Hitpoints. (Useful for killing VolitionTM Bravos)
~+Alt+k     Do 10% damage to yourself.
~+Shift+i     Make your target invincible.
~+Shift+w     Give your target unlimited weapons?

That's all that I can think of right now, try gamewinners.com (http://gamewinners.com) for more.

Thanks for clearing up the cheat isssue, I'll try that...

And for the video card thing, it never worked. The launcher simply wont work. I have to use the fs2open_3_9_something .exe to get it to run. I'm on a laptop, so the video card was installed before I got it and hasn't been changed.

ok... I tried the invinibility and it worked, but now the next mission (Destroy the Eva) will only let me arm the starter weapons (M-12 and MX-90) ??? I also got an error message about the tsunami and one other missile in the same format as my first problem. I removed the mods from the main folder and shoved them into 'Mods' folder. That worked before to clear up the previous problem, though now this is happening... any suggestions?
oh, i did switch from one campaign to another with my one pilot, is that bad or something?
Title: Re: FSPort Crash "weapon error"

Keep each mod in its own folder. Don't throw everything into the root folder or anything like that. And never, ever switch between mods with the same pilot. That will undoubtedly cause pain and misery and loss of mental health. One pilot for one mod. That makes life a lot easier.

Get the latest drivers for your video card. Or get a Radeon. :D

You do realize that you do not have to choose your video card in the launcher? How does the launcher not work? Do errors pop-up? If so, what do they say?

Your best option would be to delete everything pertaining to FS2 and use Turey's to reinstall it right.

EDIT: You do realize that to configure your video card you have to open the launcher.

ONCE AGAIN: DELETE EVERYTHING AND USE TUREY'S FSO INSTALLER.

Y'know, it occurs to me that telling anyone having trouble with mod installation to "zomg delete everything and use teh installer!!!1" rather counter-intuitively forces the user with the problem into wasting hundreds of megabytes of bandwidth downloading files he/she already has, not to mention the unnecessary bandwidth induced on the server of said files.  If this is a problem with mod installation, perhaps the more prudent solution would be aiding the user in moving files where they need to go, wouldn't it?

HaloBuff, it sounds like you have a few different problems going on at once.  You mentioned that you had to create two separate installs of FS2 in order to play the Port because your video card wasn't being recognized by the launcher.  Let's start with that; what specific type of video card do you have in your laptop?  (If you're unsure, go to your Control Panel, open up System, click on the Hardware tab, open the Device Manager, and look under Display Adapters.)  Like colecampbell said, the SCP launcher doesn't have a drop-box to select one's video card, just to choose between OpenGL and Direct3D8 (and no one should be using Direct3D, anyway).  If you're referring instead to the retail FS2 launcher, I'm fairly certain that running that isn't even necessary anymore.  If you could be more specific about what error you're getting, and where it is (posting a screenshot could help), we can help you iron out the video card issue, and then we can move on to mod installation.

Oh, and while the current SCP team advice does seem to be against using multiple mods under one pilot, I've been doing just that since 3.6.9 was released without experiencing any consequences.  Either I've just been very fortunate, or the original caveat was meant as a "we don't guarantee that this won't glitch your pilot file" disclaimer, rather than a "you are an idiot if you try that" warning.

I'm against playing many mods with one pilot. It once cost me the Prometheus S in the main FS2 campaign, and that wasn't funny.

And, as for the graphics card issue. HaloBuff, if you have a file called Launcher.exe in your root FreeSpace directory and you've tried to use itn getting these errors, you really have a severe problem with the game. If you don't have Launcher.exe, get it and use it. You might as well go straight for the Launcher 5.5c (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher55c.rar). And do consult Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ on how to install mods (see the link in my signature).

I have asked him to do simple things, such as post his directory contents, among other things, but he hasn't. That is why I am telling him to get the installer. He isn't allowing us to help him.

EDIT: The pilot file problem generally only happens if you switch campaigns halfway through.

@HaloBuff: To post a screenshot, when you get the error, select the error window and press ALT+Print Sceen. Open up MSPaint, size te canvas down so that it is very small, and press Control+V. Save it as a .BMP and post it here by clicking the additional options button to the left of the post button.

There's a lot of noise and a scarcity of justification being thrown around on this issue.  There are only two things that a player should be aware of.  If these are carefully monitored, everything else should proceed flawlessly.  I also have used the same pilot ever since I installed the SCP on this computer (about two years ago) and have never had any trouble.

1) Don't play a campaign with an incompatible mod arrangement, because you won't have the ships and weapons required by the missions.  For example, don't play the FS2 main campaign with Cardinal Spear activated -- Cardinal Spear doesn't have any Shivans, let alone any FS2-era equipment.

2) Don't switch campaigns before you've finished the one you're currently on and expect to be able to go back to it without restarting from the beginning.  Lots of people play the FS2 campaign halfway through, then install the Port and play halfway through, and then try to switch back to the FS2 campaign.  Every time you start a new campaign, it completely hoses your allowed ships and weapons.  So, even if you've managed your mod arrangement flawlessly (see #1), you may find that you are no longer allowed to use the ships or weapons you've been using up until that point.

thanks for all of your help guys, and sorry for the nonspecific descriptions as I really dont have much time to figure out what is going on, let alone understand it. I did wipe my first install of freespace, and redownloaded it. It seems the installer is smart enough to find and copy all of the mods i have on my machine to where they belong in their own folders... anyhoo I'll give this a try and if I run into any more weapons/ships availability crashes I'll post em here. Thanks again for your help.

Oh, and has anyone figured out the problem of the non-responsive 'press 1' command in the Derelict campain, no one has answered that yet...

It was probably caused by how your mods were set up. Now that you have FS2 working properly I wouldn't move any files and it should work fine. Or it could be another incarnation of the Red Alert BugTM. This bug causes various problems on the second/third parts of multi-part missions.

OH, hum.  Now it's th' audio, and dinna spare the whip!  I completly reinstalled FS2_open, its latest rendition, an' 'gasp' nay sound, by Blackbeard's sword!  On a brighter note th' second party launcher now works along with its mod selection tab, but I cant get any sound, an' nay th' 'disable sound' an' 'disable music' are NOT checked, avast.

OK, th' retail version o' th' launcher were bein' th' one wot wont work.  It wont let me select a 3d accl.  card an' crashes with "Incountered problem an' needs t' close" excuse if I hit 'detect 3d card'.

Turey's launcher works fine other than th' fact wot th' game wont use sound now.., pass the grog!  Fire the cannons! an' th' warble.fs2 an' .fs1 are both present in their respective places.
 Fire the cannons!
Any Ideas there boys? - Edited that...no rudness intended by previous typo.

hehe. found that one myself. The sound problem was caused by the removal of my usb headset. The game was looking for it instead of my soundcard and switched itself to 'no sound' under the speech/audio tab.

WHAT THE? what's the deal with the pirate translation? Special event or something?

 Ok, I've had difficulty with the hires version of the Galetea and like class ships showing up on screen and slowing the controls down to near unresponsiveness. I've gone as far as to remove sparky_hifs2.vp from its directory, but the launcher wont let me deslect its use, as it is checked and greyed out. Is this a video card thing? if so, why is the GTA destroyer class the only one to do it? I've dumbed the graphics down to simple grey shapes and it still does it whenever you get close to one, making the asteroid shooting mission nearly impossible to control. Any suggestions or fixes?

Fixed it again myself. Turns out even an AMD Turion dual 64 coupled with an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Graphics card with 2GB memory on a WinMedia Ed. Gateway isn't enough for full lighting effects, though all the others seem to look beautifull at full-on status...

New Problem, what would cause the selection box around your targets to waver and move away from the targeted ship? the farther off center they go, the further the box moves away from the ship graphic. Unfortunatly, the lead indicater goes with it and now I cant hit a thing...

The 1150 is not a very good card by today's standards. I have a 9550 which is the same as an X1050, and I can't run the AdVPs.

Dual Processor: Assign the FS2 process to one core, (try core 2 first.. should be slightly better performance) see if that helps.

And try running in 1024x768 for the graphical distortions.

Oh, and don't remove sparky_hi_fs2.vp... that's just the Retail (and FSOpen) 1024x768 res support.  This could be causing your graphical problems, because without it, you are stuck running 640x480.

What you want to do, is remove mv_adveffects.vp  That is the advanced MediaVPs effects... but, try running the FS2 process on a single processor core first (you can use Win2000 Launcher (http://majorgeeks.com/Win2000_Launcher_d438.html) to do that - it works on XP, I've used it before).   If that doesn't fix the problem, mv_adveffects.vp is found in \mediavps\

Ok, I han no Idea you could separate the cores... huh. I did put sparky back in it's place and the resolution thing is fixed, but exactly what would cause my target brackets to go ary and which fix was for that? It ran fine before I started playing with settings... oops...

It still is odd?  Well, in my signature, look under the link Troubleshoot FS2: MD5, and do that... then we'll see.  Also, post your command line options (copy + paste from the "Features" tab... the one that begins with "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe -spec -glow...." drag your mouse from there to the bottom, and hit CTRL+C, then paste them into your next post).

Ok, It's been a while. I beleive the problem fixed itself, and I have another question. The computer's generated voice works fine in the game, though pronounciation is a little off in some cases. I wonder, is there a way to get it to continue reading when using the function in Microsoft Word or Internet Explorer? It will only read to the end of a page or a few paragraphs before needing to be reset. Can it keep going or is it supposed to stop after so many lines?
