Title: Does anyone mod for Retail FS2?
Post by: Retsof on September 12, 2007, 12:59:29 pm
I am making a new campaign, using retail FS2, and will be needing at least one new ship.  Can anyone help me out? :(

Creating a Retail campaign is quite pointless, nobody will play it. ;)

um, most of us know how. me included (I have been moding freespace since freespace 1!).
but really, just use the scp, man. unless you have a really old graphics card or your parents won't let you download (Titan), you should always use the scp.

Well, for one thing, my internet is slow, it would take way too long to download SCP, though I do have an evil plan to download from a library computer and put it on my flash drive :drevil:.  Oh, and the model is a Fenneris that has been modified by shivans.

The SCP version of the program itself (with all the coding improvements, etc) is only a few megs. Even on dialup that shouldn't take too long.

True, the MVs would be time-consuming as heck for you to download, but they're not strictly required...

It's true, but Star Downloader should solve the problem. I have a slow connection and managed to DL BtRL in a few days! ;)

If he doesn't *want* to use the SCP, there's nothing that says he has to.

Incidentally, Retsof, the vast majority of released ships will work on retail FS2 as well as on SCP.  Just keep your eyes open.  Hades Combine is a good place to start.

What kind of ship are you looking for?  It's probably easier if you build a campaign using a mod that's already been released, such as FSPort or Inferno.

hmmm....
no one did that before -- I guess a simple re-texture wouldn't do?

Two things I can think of - remake it yourself , or get some models from Inferno R1 ( it's for Freespace2 Retail ) .

I'd need to find a program to mod with, preferably free, but who knows, maybe I'd be good at it. :warp:
I'll try again to download SCP and see what happens.

While I agree that SCP is probably the better platform to mod for as long as you're careful to ensure that your missions work on SCP as well as retail (which isn't that hard) then you should have no problems.

Just get one of your beta-testers to run the game through FRED2_Open in debug mode and you've pretty much solved most of the problems you would have.
