Personally, I liked this game more than Civ. Maybe it's just because you can get air power and missiles much earlier, so they can make a huge difference sooner, or maybe because it's a view of things to come.
Anyone remember this gem?

I liked messing with the game's climate. Terraforming was the best thing in the game.

Very good game, available from some abandonware sites I think, but get the expansion if you can: that requires hunting through Ebay or the like.
-
Awesome game, a shame I never went too far on it. Guess I got scared when I ended playing five hours of it with no breaks. Definitely better than Civ, yes.

Or you could always pirate them both. ;7
Oh, and hi.

Yes but does it work on Vista TM ??????
-
One of the better games. The only problem is it takes a lifetime to learn and use all the available tech options/paths optimally...
Or maybe it's not a problem after all :)
-
Yeah, I've been wanting the expansion for a good number of years now. Can't seem to find it, though.

The Alpha Centauri planetary pack is one of the few games I own legally, try searching for that. It should just be one CD.

Hard-Light Productions does not support piracy in any shape or form.

Hard Light Productions does not condone piracy for legal reasons, but most of its members support piracy anyways. You just aren't allowed to post any direct links. In public. PMs are okay.

What? The expansion pack with the Rangers faction and whatnot? I saw it on
www.the-underdogs.info
It was an excellent game, especially for its time. In terms of reviewer scores it may have been the most successful videogame in history, actually. The only thing Civ ever had over it is eye candy. A+ storyline and gameplay.

I know i support piracy, I just don't talk about. I didn't know how much you could say without getting in trouble.

Oh, and hi.
:welcomepurple:
First time I've beamed someone. It feels good. :drevil:

A purple beam? WTF?
I remember the old days. Good old green beams. Non of this new age purple beam stuff.
-
The beam isn't purple, it's blue. You should get your eyes checked.
-
It's purple, even the link says so...

Back on topic, my favorite faction in the original was definately the university, although even with them I found it hard to do research quickly without having a borehole at every base. Since I often times ended up on an island when I used random maps, I liked to have a strong navy and airforce (interceptors and bombers as well as a sizeable number of missiles). Except for defending, I didn't have much of an infantry force.
Something I've always wondered is how big of a difference does armor really make (other than with cost)?

As for the game, I rememeber playing the demo of that. The build-your-own units feature was nice, but overall I found it slightly less fun than Civ.

Defensively, all the difference in the world. It's nice to be able to use the same unit to hold what you've taken, although in my experience generally you don't get continous fronts or much in the way of combat outside of the area of a base when the AI's running things. The engine's not advanced enough I suppose. (I haven't seen a continous front used by the AI in any of the Civ games either, but at least in Civ 3/Civ 4 you get something like it, i.e. you and they would both end up feeding units into a general area and most of the battles occurred there.)
