Title: -Release- GTI Asteria!
Post by: Oddgrim on September 15, 2007, 08:45:45 am
Tech Description:
(The GTI Asteria is a station minted for commerce and trade , with it's 9 docking points and able to station one wing of fighters for patrolling purposes, the station is well fitted to serve as a hub for trade in the system. With it's 24 turrets it can defend itself from minor pirate raids but would need assistance if a major capital ship should arrive at the scene of the battle.)

Puh! finally done with this monster, model changes and texturing is done by me.
Special thanks goes to Axem for creating the original model!

Sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused.

I won't know what's wrong but I uploaded the file again and included the .ibx file which  I had forgotten.
If that doesn't work then I don't know hat could be wrong.

edit: still fubared.. think it's filefront fault.. takeing down the link to this is fixed.

edit.v2: FIXED!
Please tell me of whatever else I could have overlooked , and ps: file front can burn in the lake of fire.

first off, looks great! i might have to employ that little bugger, second...post offices are over done. i'd go with a more vintage approach to the matter and find a nice clock tower! :D  ((for any feds reading through this site...we're just kidding alright...no need to illegaly tap our phones and PC's, post 'round the clock observation, and dig through our garbage))
as for the problem itself, if it's still buggy maybe upload the pre conversion .COB file and texture set, any body that downloads will have to run it through PCS themselves. might side step the problem for now if it still is a problem. just an idea.

haha honestly I was only jokeing...  :P
As for the .pof file itself it's nothing wrong with it. On a side note tho I'll take your advice the next time I go a on a genocidal homicide. :p

Nice work. :) Though I do spy a few errors here and there...

The largest one is the model is flipped around in a few dimensions. The fighterbay is supposed to be on the lower front or right (depending on how you define it, basically on the bottom). And speaking of the fighterbay, some of the ribs you added are extend too far out and just hover in space.

And some of your platform side docking points are oriented wrong. Instead of parallel to the platform, ships will dock perpendicular with it, which can make it impossible to dock realistically with.

It only has like 15k polys, that is not to much is it?

Thanks , the docking points where aligned as I've gotten the model imported in the first place. :) As for teh fighterbay ribs : Yeah I know that , thats why I made it so , thought it would look cool. :)

The model in total has around 26k~ polys and 4 LODs the first L0D is on around 8k ( not counting the turrets with it ) the second 6k , third 4k and forth 3k~ ( I could probable  educe even more but I didn't notice much even when I tested it out by staging a battle around it. :) ( 8 wings of fighters several cruisers and one corvette ).
Soo no I don't think it's too much. but anyway :p

Hades: That poly count is non-triangulated. FS2 works in triangles, so that count is misleading.

Oddgrim: This. :p

The centre hole docking point would've triggered the teeth to open and close. It'd be a little more complex to get that working correctly.

aaaah! I've forgotten about them but sinde I can't animate triggers ... yet so I deleted them. Perhaps add them in again on a later date.

Is polygon support for anything but triangles slated for the code?

What about detail boxes?
Title: Re: -Release- GTI Asteria!
Post by: colecampbell666 on September 17, 2007, 07:03:56 pm
They are do-able, the ISD in the SWC uses them (or will). I assume that they make it so that when you go near a part of the ship, that part becomes detailed.

*ahem*

Tell me, how do you make a square? Why, you put two triangles together! Tell me, how do you make a pentagon? Why, you put 5 triangles together! Tell me, how do you make a hexagon? Why, you put 6 triangles together! Tell me, how do you make a heptagon? Why, you put 7 triangles together! Tell me, how do you make a octagon? Why, you put 8 triangles together! Tell me, how do you make a Novagon? Why, you put 9 triangles together! Tell me, how do you make a decagon? Why, you put 10 triangles together!

EVERYTHING CAN BE AND IS MADE OUT OF TRIANGLES IN A GRAPHICS ENGINE!

*Disclaimer - pentagons, hexagons and whatnot can be made out of lots of combinations of triangles, i just listed the more obvious ones.

I know that. It would just be easier if you didn't have to subdivide the faces.

I didn't feel like finishing it. :p Actually it was probably UV mapping/texturing everything that put me off.
