I have the freespace open launcher but cannot for the life of me figure where to put what where help would be apprciated. just give me a step by step (put this here) for one example mod and i will be able to figure the rest out thanks to whoever takes pity on me. ok heres some more trouble, when i open the laucher it says "App failed to start because OpenAC32.dll was not found" what does that mean? after i hit ok there is antoher message that says "cannot read red flag" then i can choose the mod and hit RUN then the same Message (the first one) pops up. need help. thanks for all the feedback

I can talk via MSN and give you hints and links. It should be better than posting here :)

No wait, lemme try.
If you were to install, let's say, Derelict, you'd have to create a folder called Derelict in your root Freespace directory. Then you'd download and/or extract all the mod files into the Derelict folder. After that you'd open the Launcher, select the MOD tab, click on Select MOD, select the Derelict folder from the list, hit OK, start the game, create a new pilot and finally go to the Campaign room and select Derelict as your campaign.
Was that complicated enough? Don't worry, you'll soon get the hang of it.

I don't think he has the media vps, however.
Ok, check the link to The FAQTM in my sig. There's a section about installing mods. You can also get a mod.ini file from there :)
-
No, but he did say he has the LauncherTM.
Then again, in that case it is really advisable to get the mediavps too.
-
That's why he should visit The FAQTM. He can find everything there :)

My advice would be to run Turey's FSO installer(The download link is at the top of the forum). That will install all the major mods for you. Then when you want to try something else you have a folder already on your HD that you can look at and see how things are done.

And, if you're freaked out for some reason, consult the FreeSpace Open Installation Walkthrough (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,47640.0.html).

I feel bad saying this a second time in two days:
You forgot to TM that one.
Back on topic: what Karajorma said. That's what I've done, and so far so good (Except for Sol: A History and Inferno Alliance, but that's a whole other can of worms with those two campaigns)

And no body has mentioned the fact that he needs to install OpenAL?? Which is why he's receiving that error message!

That is a mighty good point. I was effectively distracted because Dirg's original post said "OpenAC32.dll", which could either be a typo or a visual error of Dirg.
Luckily I've made a semi-direct link to downloading OpenAL in my sig. Use the link, Dirg.

Yeah, also read the part about deleting the 3 common residual old openAL files that also cause problems. Even if you install OpenAL, if you have these older files lurking on your system, it won't work. (I did and didn't even know I installed OAL before Freespace 2. I think it came with my motherboard's driverset, since I have an Nforce 4 board.)
