James Oliver Rigney, better known by his pseudonym Robert Jordan, author of bestseller fantasy series The Wheel of Time amongst other literary products (like numerous books of Conan the Barbarian), passed peacefully away last Sunday after a long and valiant fight against amyloidosis. He was survived by his wife, Harriet McDougal, and undoubtedly many other [extended] family members that I do not know about. He will surely be missed by all of his friends as well as fans world wide.
Apparently the man took his motto about "keeping on writing until they nail his coffin shut" seriously. Thus, my respect to the memory of the man as well as condolences to his close ones.
This feels bad, even more so because he was rather optimistic about future as well as his ability to conclude his fantasy epic before dying, and had a lot of interesting ideas he never got to realize in printed form. I guess the 12th and final book of the Wheel of Time, Memory of Light will be completed based on his notes, and he did reveal the important twists of the story to his family before his untimely death, but reading it won't be the same. A fitting name for the series finale indeed.

Rest in peace, Mr. Rigney

Yeah I saw this. I'm was crushed. From reading his blogs on Dragonmount he seemed like a really good guy with a pretty amazing optimism and fighting spirit. I was fairly shocked by it as well because though it was a terminal illness and he was only givien a 6 month or 1 year prognosis, as Herra said, he seemed certain he'd make it five.
A great series of books despite one or two dull ones. I hope (rather selfishly) that he had time to leave enough notes to make the book his own.

Oh no, I knew the day would come, but I always hoped he would somehow pull through. I just recently started reading The Wheel of Time series and I am on the third book, The Dragon Reborn, and I can tell by his writing that he is a very kind and intelligent person. He will be missed.
