Title: Pirate Talk
Post by: Capt.Jack on September 19, 2007, 07:53:03 pm
I think there is some kind of bug or virus on the forums that is adding pirate talk to posts i just made a post that had no pirate in it whatsoever and when i looked at it it had been changed.  Pirate talk was added to it. then when i tried to edit it, it showed my original pirate free post. This post will probably have pirate talk added to it as well.  :confused:

This is what happens on National Talk like a Pirate Day, matey.
 Drink up me hearties, yo ho, and a bottle of rum!
Not a bug or virus.   Walk th' plank!  And swab the deck!  It'll be gone by tomorrow.

There's something I can't understand.

When a new thread about internal affairs of a certain country is created, most members(who either don't live in thay country or aren't interested on what happens there)avoid the discussion or post something like "We're not all Americans, you know".

The Talk like a Pirate Day is pretty much the same thing, but has a far worse effect. The number of members who don't like the idea is extended to all foreigners(I mean all non-English/Americans, like me). I have also noticed the presence of many English/American members who don't like the idea, as well.

:doubt:

Ah, c'mon.  Let the admins have their joke... it's their attempt at humor, and meant in good spirits, for the most part.  For the other part, it's probably to remind us who's the boss, and perhaps to get us to lighten up a bit... IDK.  ;)

Let me preface by saying that I don't often go into the control panel for the forums and even less know how to throw switches that make the various filters turn on and off but the pirate speak thing just cracks me up.  It doesn't happen all the time...once or twice a year at the worst and its usually just a bit of a practical joke that we play.  Personally I find it hilarious.  We have learned our lessons mind you and none of the internal discussion areas for projects are affected by the filter so collaboration in those areas can continue unabated.

We like to have fun now and again...perhaps its just a cruel little joke.  If forum members have suggestions for non-destructive (another lesson learned) ways to celebrate in various ways or small practical jokes that are easily changed back the next day please let us know.

Keep it light!

For the sake of equal rites and political correctness, I call for a Talk Like A Ninja (http://www.talklikeaninja.com/) day as well.

Why not? We'll then add the Talk like a Sicilian day, the Talk like a Napolitan day, the Talk like a Roman(modern one) day, the Talk like a Roman(old one) day, the Talk like an Emo day, the Talk like a Star Wars mad fan day, the Talk like a  Viper pilot day, the Talk like Mussolini day, the Talk like Churchill day, the Talk like Gandhi day, the Talk like a Gay day {insert VERY long list}

Let's turn HLP into a Cosmopolitan site. A bad one. :P

<please note my sarcasm...I don't want a Naruto Ninja Day>

We had several talk like a ninja days back when we were on Gamespy. You wouldn't be able to get to HLP and when you finally did the next day you'd find that no one had said anything at all!

It's not an HLP thing, it's an international observance. Kingdom of Loathing, for example, adds random "arr"s to the end of chat messages on Sept. 19th. Now, if only everyone celebrated Leif Eriksson day...
