Title: Freelancer into FreeSpace mod - anyone thought of it ?
Post by: ShadowGorrath on September 29, 2007, 12:41:38 pm
Has anyone thought of making a mod that turns Freelancer into FreeSpace ? I have a lot of ideas about it , and with the tools for FL , I don't think it'd be hard to make that kind of mod .

I've thought oof this quite often, as well as the opposite. But since I lack the knowhow, the means, the time and the patience to actually do something, I've decided to just shut up about the subject.

Changing Freelancer as opposed to just adding single mod ships is incredibly hard. AFAIK only two people have attempted it and I'd rather bang my head against SCP all day long then try to tackle the FL Code (especially since I don't know code).

Converting FL ships into FS2 is much simpler, as well as skyboxes and other assorted stuff. Noobs like me can actually do stuff on our own much easier.

You'd get a better response and perspective if you posted this on LANCERSREACTOR.

The community has a diff feel there, so don't get put off if they don't welcome your suggestions with open arms.

You know, if you want to play FS, you can always play it on the FS engine. You don't even have to mod anything!

What you can't do in FS2 , but can do in FL :

1. Normally control capital ships .
2. Buy various ships .
3. Fully roleplay without having to open up FRED2 and know most of stuff in FRED2 .
4. Land on planets .
5. Explore the galaxy .
6. Actually be independant from missions .

That's why I think that kind of mod would be great .

Also , I saw one mod for FL that had made 90% of their stuff in about a week . It's not released yet for testing and lazyness though  :p .

Yeah . So it's a pitty that there's no FreeSpace mod for Freelancer . With all the tools and tutorials for FL , it shouldn't be hard to make the mod .

Who's available to create it, anyway? The modellers are busy with their own projects.

Creating small Freelancer mods is quite easy but importing ships, skyboxes, changing the descriptions etc. is  annoying and more complicated than in Freespace. I tried to create a real Freelancer mod and failed horribly.

It sounds like you're talking about playing Freelancer with Freespace ships. Not Freespace on Freelancer.

Anyway, IMHO Freelancer's game engine sucked. What with the planets having a diameter of three or four miles, systems two hundred miles across, stars maybe forty...

I never really pictured Orions as being almost as big as a planet.

Yeh, the entertainment values kicked realism's arse in FL. Then again, what else could you expect from Nitrosoft? They just had to publish a game that'd be fun and easy to get into, which would result in profit.

Had Digital Anvil been doing the game for another publisher and had they wanted, they probably could've done it so that planets would have been huge, the distances great and all three dimensions in heavy use. Not to mention that planets would spin around and circle around the suns, and space stations around planets. But in that point it would have been the same to just add Newtonian physics as well. And why not even a little detail that the player's character would die in radiation poisoning after, let's say, 30 hours of gameplay. So eventually the entertainment game would have turned into a heavy simulator, that would have appealed to those interested in realism and actual space travel. In addition to that, the hardware requirements would have risen somewhat due to the huge solar objects and such.

I admit that I probably would have skipped FL, if there had been a heavy learning curve, with requirements on space physics and the need for patience when you had to explore huge cubical areas in order to find bases or anything at all. But I do think that the capital ships could have been bigger and the difficulty level either higher or adjustable. In FL battleships, the culmination of military warfare, were barely as big as cruisers in FS. And on my first time playing through the story I blew up once. And that was basically because I stopped next to a hostile battleship while being also surrounded by several fighter wings, ignoring the shield-o-meter.

Not quite. Combat was dull and redundant no matter how you looked at it, and trading was just stupid. All of the missions we're almost exactly alike: "go here, kill everything" or "go here and kill this guy." The only thing that I'll admit was really fun was just exploring things at the end of the game. And that lost it's fun after three or four hours. And the graphics weren't anything spectacular, either.

Making a game like freelancer was a bad idea IMHO. They just completely kill space games by messing with the scale.

K, true. The 'attempted entertainment values' kicked realism's arse.

But now that I thought of it, I actually liked the use of mouse as a... what's the term... 'virtual joystick'. At least I felt like I had good control over my ship using the mouse. No need to start messing around with a keyboard. Although I do admit that some people were righfully pissed off due to the no-no philosophy towards real joysticks. That was a bad move.

Thanks, you just reminded me of all the reasons that killed my enjoyment of FL as a game (Now just a resource folder on my drive)...  :p

The lancer reactor has FS ships for Freelancer already, just have a browse. :)

I've seen those ships . A few fighters . There was an Orion , but not for download .

And FS2 a mod for FL would be good . FL is not nearly as good as FreeSpace2 itself or HomePlanet Demo , though . But a FreeSpace2 mod would be pretty cool . You actually able to command a destroyer , fire beam cannons , be a trader , explore the GTVA or some Shivan systems , etc.

And there is a supposed SDK for FL , new system maker tool , ships can be added easily , etc.

Though I agree that Freelancer is not nearly as easily modable as FreeSpace2 .

I'd love it as long as the planets systems and bases were resized

Hackers screwed up the site/servers so Microsoft decided to take if offline for a while except for that cover page.

They will be back, probably in a few months.

Not that I weep, but God damned hackers!
