Just installed the game on XP. When I run the game nothing happens. Ive followed the solutions posted already but everything seems to be made for Freespace2 only and none of them have worked for freespace1. Anyone know what I can do?

Use Turey's FSO Installer (link in my sig) to get FreeSpace Open. Make sure that you download FSPort with it. Then, just play FSPort, which is basically FS1 using all the neat tricks FS2 and FSO bring with them.

No, don't. How did you install the game? Do you have the discs? Did you install FSO? If I could have this info I could help some.

I installed the game from the normal retail cd. Im using the FSO installer now, its downloading the files

Is it downloading to the same directory? (a.k.a "C:\Games\FreeSpace2" and not "C:\Games\freespace2")

Yea, it downloaded into the same directory. Its finished downloading now

Ok. If you have the disks it saves bandwidth to download Turey's FSO over them, as it saves alot of bandwidth. Another thing that you can do is to copy the disk movies to /movies. When you run FSO make sure to select the file "launcher.exe".

Uh, cole? It doesn't matter if it's capitalized or not. :wtf:

Yeah, WinD'ohs isn't that cranky about capital letters.
Besides, using the Installer was a preferrable option, since the topic and the first post imply that he had FS1 installed, not FS2. I'm guessing there'd be some funky consequences if you installed FSO over FS1. But apparently everything works now.

Saves bandwidth if you install over FS2!!!! NOT FS1! I've already helped someone recover from that mess, I'd rather not do it again. The only thing you can get from FS1 is the .MVE cutscenes, using the patchfiles found in my walkthrough. But, if you have FS1 installed into C:\Games\FreeSpace and FS2 (through FSO) installed to C:\Games\FreeSpace2, then you should be good to go. To get FreeSpace 1 working, you could try Windows '95 compatibility mode... does the FS1 Launcher detect your graphics card? And, did you use the patch to 1.06EAX? (1.0x -> 1.06 -> 1.06EAX)
-
You may not need compat. mode, though. My PC works fine for FS1+2 without it.

Ya, try the patch first. (1.06EAX)
