Hi all.
I'm a newbie to Freespace 2 and I'm enjoying the game for weeks already. Recently, I downloaded the AVI cutscenes in one of the links provided at the Freespace Oracle. However, after placing them into the Freespace 2 folder, nothing happened, i.e. no cutscenes were played.
I got my Freespace 2 from Bittorrent via HOTU (IIRC, it isn't the HOTU version because it's 600+MB large, not 200+). Then I went to http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/) to get Freespace 2 Open, but did not download Freespace 2 retail since I had the Bittorrent program already.
Initially, the AVIs would not play. I tinkered with the video settings in the launcher (selecting Direct3D instead of OpenGL), resolution, etc. Now, not all AVIs are playing.
I also downloaded from this forum a link to 3.6.9 (can't recall exact thread) and am able to see some AVIs, but not all. In some settings, I can see the intro, all the rest none. In other settings, I don't see the intro, only some AVIs after that.
Any ideas? Thanks. :)

Run the Installer again, and select all of the retail stuff, the windows executables, and the .ogg movies. That'll fix your install. It won't download anything you already have.

Yes, it is. The HotU version is 600+mb, since it nowadays contains full 1.2 version of FS2, excluding the cutscenes. If you've been reading the otherwise fantastic Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ, it's a bit out of date.
selecting Direct3D instead of OpenGL
Don't do that. OpenGL works better in most, if not all cases. And, at least with me, Direct3D prevents the cutscenes from playing.
And, what was included in Turey's post, get the ogg movies. I think I remember hearing that avi support is being faded away from FSO.

Yes
:welcome:
TomasCTT, AVI support was dropped from FS2Open some time ago, as we are now relying on Ogg movies (Smaller and better quality) Download the Ogg format movies and select OpenGL to play, you'll know straight away if they are working as the Intro movie will play!

Actually 3.6.9 should still play AVIs AFAIK. It's a moot point of course cause if the code has broken no one is going to fix it since we've moved over to supporting MVE and OGG instead.

Copy that all, thanks very much. :) Will be using the installer again this weekend.
Q: Aside from downloading and installing the OpenAL installer, will just merely copying the entire Freespace 2 folder (including mods, etc) to another computer work? I want to give a copy to a friend, after showing him Freespace 2 (the original, not the better Open version). :) Since he only has a dial-up connection, downloading Freespace 2 using the FSO installer is not an option.
Again, many thanks. :) If I still can't have the cutscene play after the download, will be here on this thread to ask about it again. :)

Thanks Turey. :) Will burn it to DVD then.

Finished downloading last night, cutscenes are now playing. :) No problems so far but ISTR detecting some "hiccups" (for lack of a better term). Exactly which, I can't recall but I had a grand time playing last night. :) Again, many thanks!
