Title: Shields on capital ships?
Post by: npsi on October 04, 2007, 10:47:29 am
Is that possible?
I mean, adding a shield thingy on a capital ship, i.e, a fenris cruiser and see if it works... (like starwars destroyers)

There is a non HTL Deimos that was shielded inside HC.

There is a modded SSD Diablo with shields in ITDOH, and I think the Lucifer in later versions of the Port is shielded (I mean, you know, actually shielded not just ship-invulnerable), so it is very possible.

As for how to do it? I don't know.  :p

AFAIK Shieldmeshes (which are not bubble shaped) still don't work on capships very good, since it can give you random crashes. There has been some intention on fixing this, but I'm not sure how far it is.

If you played WCS, you could try our method. Add the "surface shield" flag to the vessel, that will at least make them appear in the HUD-Icons and you get a shieldhit sound when shooting at them.

However, the bad side is that you cannot have shieldhit animation with surface shields (yet  :nervous: )

Random crashes??? How serious or often is this occurring? I mainly ask in relation to the Trek Mod in which almost every cap has some sort of shielding amount. I really hadn't noticed that many unaccounted for crashes.

I've not noticed any random crashes when using aforementioned shielded caps...

AFAIK (= could be wrong) the amount of polies used in the shieldmesh affects this.. The simpler the shield the better.

Though not too simple I suppose, they can look strange that way.

a while ago, i downloaded some mod that had shields on the aeulos, mentu, sobek, and ... maybe some others. I don't remember what it was called, and also somewhere there is an aten with shields.

I think the shielded Aeolus and such were in Unholy Alliance.

Several of the UA models were either ugly (e.g. GTC Avenger) or buggy (GVFg Amon-Re).

But the mod and missions were kinda fun to play around with, nonetheless. Even though that one fighter weapon was utterly broken and uber.

Shields work on capships 100% fine. They work in SWC, they work in other mods too. We need some new shield support, though, because the shield flickers are way too big (since they're calculated based on the size of the ship). I've got 1800 poly shield meshes that work A-OK, but this is with recent PCS2 builds.

Something I noticed with the shielded Lucifer in FSPort was that the shield mesh flared when I fired my weapons at it - not when the weapon hit.  Has anyone else seen this?
