Title: De Nominibus Navium (About Ships' Names)
Post by: Mobius on October 04, 2007, 03:27:21 pm
When browsing the Wiki(great job guys!) I had an idea: should we write something about the names? Especially for Shivan ships, since they're all references to Mythology and Hindu religion.

I can do this job for many ships(GTC Aeolus, GTD Messana, GTC Sparta, GTC Malta and any other thing directly or undirectly connected to me).

Is it a good idea?

Yes, it is. Let's fill the Wiki with references to Latin and Greek!

I don't see why not. If we have a ship entry we might as well have an "origin of name" section. There's some FS site out there with a list of the origin of every ship class name in the game, which should make things easier.

The main problem with proposals like this is, "it's great but who's going to do it?" I'll look into it and I give it a thumbs up regardless.

As I said, I'm available. The amount of work to do depends on how we are going to do it. If we write simple but effective references like this:

Quote
"Messana" is the Latin for "Messina", city located in Southern Italy.

We can get the job done in a few :)

<I will obviously ask for grammar checking>

I have just checked it. There only are references to names used for ship classes...we should use them, though.

So...can we start? ;)

What do you want me to do?

Simple. I want you to help me.

What should I write, anyway? "Trivia:", "Note:" or "About the name:" when I add something?

EDIT: Please give me some feedback...I think I've exaggerated a bit with the GTD Aeneas.

I don't know if I should add more Trivia(like in the NTC Alba entry)

Singh did some research on the mythology part a few years back, might get useful:

Ok, thanks :)

What about some Trivia(I mentioned it before)?

Example:

Trivia: Alba is Italian for "Dawn" and Latin for "white"(refered to a female)

"De la Croix" is French for "of the Cross"

What about it?

EDIT: Singh wrote too many things. I have "something short but effective" in mind. The link is going to be useful, anyway. There are theories about missions' names, they will be useful

Most of what you do on the Wiki is on your own initiative, don't expect anyone to "supervise". If someone doesn't like it, they'll just suggest that it be deleted. So go ahead and take risks.

Adding the info to the ship databases is fine with me. If you want, you could also look at the FreeSpace Trivia (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Trivia) page.

I think I'll take the risk. FreeSpace is mythology centered and according to Singh, there are no random names. I think it would be ok... ;)

Well, I wouldn't use the term 'mythology centered'. That would suggest that the game has a lot to do with mythologies. I'd rather say that they merely used names from mythologies for the ships. And why not? They usually sound good. And there aren't that many option for naming policies. If you tried to come up with completely new names, it would be somewhat hard to come up with letter combinations that sound like something and weren't repetitive. If you used some other sources for names, you might get something like GTD Penne all'arrabbiata or GTB Daffodil, which would eat credibility.

Mythological names just sound good and can be spooky/heroic/whatnot, depending on the situation.

Ehm, sorry, I was refering to the names only. FreeSpace uses plenties of mythological names(most ship classes, except for Watchdog...and many ships).

And they're important, too...the Lucifer wouldn't have been terrifying with the name of an insect

The Hippocrates name really goes with the GTM Hippocrates.
I Might be able to help with the wiki.
I will just have to see...

I did most of the Terran ship classes, and some other Vasudan and Shivan classes, too.

Err...

I think I'd rather see the name origins all on one page, rather than scattered across many pages.

That's going to be hard at this point because... Well practically all ships have an origin of names section now.

Well, somebody went and added them, didn't they?  Somebody can move them to one page. :p

Goober, you are the one who want to see all of them on one page, so you cut/paste them.

I agree, but a separate page means that we should add references. You can't copy and paste the line about the Messana without a reference, for example.

We can paraphrase that, or do some research ourselves.
