Title: FreeSpace3
Post by: RedBaron on October 05, 2007, 05:58:24 pm
Hey guys, im new here and from germany so my english isnt very well :ick: i hope youll show mercy^^

oh and before i start i have a question^^: is there a FreeSpace Community TeamSpeak Server??? If no we could use the server of my Battlefield2 clan
87.106.18.129:8989

eeerr...soo

I see no other FS3 thread but im sure you heard about it.

In Google you cant find many answers but ive found this:

http://www.gamezone.de/news_detail.asp?nid=25723&nf=pc&rand=1907021824

I´ll try to translate the important things...
The Game Designer "Derek Smart" wants to buy the rights of FreeSpace from Interplay to develop(?) the third part of FS.
As we know is Interplay in finacial troubles so its possible that they will sell the rights.
But Derek Smart is the developer of poor games like "Battlecruiser 3000AD" so we dont have to expect much from him.

I hope you are satisfied with my translation :nervous:

Mit freundlichen grüßen
RedBaron^^

welcome to 2004.

that's old news, and don't worry we scared that vulture off.
there will be no FS3, it sold too poorly and the company holding the IP rights is dead.

sence someone else will if I don't. this is a bad topic to make, it has been sence the turn of the melemium. you may experience some hostility for makeing it.

We've already had several idiots on these forums claim to be making FS3, don't become one of them.

FS3 will never come out, but the SCP is a great game! Who knows, maybe you'll be able to contribute.

Don't worry about your English, many forum-goers don't speak English as a first language. There are many German FS-ers.

My initial impulse was to immediately lock this (which I did), however, I'm leaving it open just so this guy can get his answers. I wish we still had that thread at the top that was stickied, where did that go?

Red Baron, I will, however, warn you straight up - there will be no FS3, and do not make topics about it. It gets a lot of people (including myself) quite annoyed.

That would be going too far. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this thread as it stands right now. It's clear that the OP is not aware of the details of that incident.

Ya, perhaps you could post in the admins boards that we are not interested in scaring away people who have never heard of the FreeSpace series, or who have been out of the loop since they bought it when it was released.  It's one thing if you have a sticky up at the top of the thread.  It's another if you don't... and if you lock it, put a little blurb saying "see FS3 sticky" or somesuch.  EDIT: Oh, and I was going to mention TeamSpeak as well, perhaps that should be implemented?  It got lost in the "ZOMFGWTFBBQ HE MENTIONED FS3" hype.

Unknown Target did mention he was leaving the thread open after locking it initially (I think). :)

I admit I'm a noob and don't have anything to contribute, but here's my .02-cents for this thread:

Sticky it with an explanation why there's no FS3.  Add a link or paste the FS3 wiki article on this thread as added info to all newcomers (including me). :)  That way, no noob would get "scared away."  Just IMO....

PS

Am trying to spread FS at another forum.  :D hehehe

Dear Mr. Baron. As it has been said, there shan't be a next FS, since the company that made the first two isn't interested or possibly even capable of doing it. So there will never be an official ending to the story. But, hopefully you are aware of all the fan made campaigns that are lurking here. Many of them take place after FS2, so by playing them you can see, what kind of visions the campaign makers had about the events after FS2. Yes, it is not canon information, but it's something nonetheless. A few campaigns that come to my mind immediately are Derelict and Blue Planet, which was just released. Play them to see what might have happened after FS2 and be happy with it.

how many people actually still get pissed off when someone mentions fs3? i honestly dont. now i can see how people would be pissed off about having a new fs3 thread every other day. but it has become such an old wornout joke that i dont really care anymore. i just blow it off and ignore it like the rest of the spam that congests theese boards. its not really that big of a deal.

If you see a topic about FS3, you should get excited because:

Either you've got a really green newb joining your ranks, or:

You've got a really overripe n00b soon to be leaving them.

Yep. Back on the VBB and in HLP's early days it was a problem. FS3 threads used to be common and used to follow the exact same path every single time that they got annoying. Nowadays they're not common enough to be annoying but what happens is that a lot of people who want to fit in think that cause they saw people getting angry when they first joined that it is the sort of behaviour that should be displayed now.

Basically it's the same as it was with the welcome speech and beaming. All the cool kids used to do it years ago and no one who did it (excessively in the case of beaming) had spotted that they stopped quite a while back.

Exactly. I am getting a little tired of the hostility that always comes up in these threads, and it's usually instigated by one of the veteran posters. This particular one was quite reasonable and not exactly the standard "let's make our own FS3" call to action. If you're seriously getting annoyed by people talking about a hypothetical computer game, you need to get a life. :p

This is what happens every single time there is an FS3 thread. First, people get angry at him for mentioning FS3, then we realize that he didn't know better and didn't mean any harm, third we realize that there was no harm, and lastly,  we become appalled at the way we responded at first.

I'm still, and probably always will be, 50/50 about a Freespace 3. Part of me would love to know what happens next, the other part knows that no matter what it is, I'll feel vaguely disappointed, especially since it means either the story finishes or we are talking about Freespace 4 etc...

Actually it's not usually a veteran so much as someone who has been around a year or two at most. Those of us with 4-5 years here tend to react like nuke did.

Well, I used the term "veteran" loosely to include all of those, but you see my point. Although in this particular case, the thread was generally fine until UT's post.

Anyway, I think people get the message here. Just be cool with this topic.

I've been here over 3 years and never seen any of this massive hostility towards people who make FS3 topics.  Just a lot of people saying not to mention it in case people get angry.  And the ludicrous obsession with making not mentioning it some kind of rule.

I don't think that you can be a veteran at twelve.
Title: Re: FreeSpace3
Post by: Jeff Vader on October 08, 2007, 10:26:03 am
Yeah. The higher deities here probably have a definition, but I'd say a veteran is any active member, who has registered in 2004 or earlier, and exceeds at least the age of 16.

And Titan, you can get closer to veteran status, if you learn to use the url tags.

Hell no. You're not a veteran 'till you've been here for at least 5 years.

And you're twelve. So :p

You can usually distinguish between newbs, normal members, and vets quite easily. You don't really need a definition.

It's an arbitrary title, anyway.

Well, FreeSpace 3 would be nice if it was released in... say 2001 (and that it sold!), however, now the community has done so much that... we actually don't "need" fs3.... Mabye a novell, or an mod from [V] wich explains it all, but no FS3.
