this wouldnt be the first time somone came up with a super strong transparent material.
-
Last one I saw actually had aluminium as one of the constituent elements in fact. :D
-
any whales gone missing recently ?
-
Transparent aluminum is thin strong stuff. Development of it has happened, it's going to be windows on armored vehicles in particular. Right now the project of transparent aluminum is to make it cheaper to produce since right now it's sort of expensive.

There be whales in here captain!

unless I see it in actiopn I'm not buying it, lol.

Everyone remember where we parked.

"Fascinating."
"He's dead Jim."
any more Star Trek movie quotes you wanna shove around?
-
You're on the forum mainly devoted to playing an old science fiction space shooter. What do you think?
-
"Humor Mr. Spock, humor!"
-
One damn minute, Admiral.
-
The whole point was that the quotes were relevant to the transparent aluminum scene, but I guess some of you didn't catch that, so I'm typing this post. ;)

Ok...
"Yes, but you will be rich beyond the dreams of avarice."
Happy now? :P
-
How tough is top notch transparent armor anyway? The biggest problem with it now is that once you shoot it with something it is no longer transparent.
-
The way it's going to be put onto armored vehicles is with a sandwiching scheme. The transparent aluminum gets sandwiched between two layers of thicker transparent material. Probably the same bulletproof glass we use today. So, it'd be able to absorb bullets and deflect them. Transparent aluminum is able to withstand an armor piercing bullet from a .50c sniper rifle and other tests it was able to stand up to some cool stuff.
