Ok so I've never played Freespace before. Ya I know, that's bad to say in a community that's this die hard over a game this old, but I wanna play :) I have acquired a copy of this game, and I wanna know what everyone recommends to get the most out of it. Is the community released package just a graphics upgrade? Should I play the original thru in it's entirety before adding the user created content? Help a nub out :)

For starters. If you have the retail FS2, and you apparently have, install it first. Then, get Turey's FSO Installer (link in my sig), and use it to install FSO over your FS2 install. That way you'll save precious bandwidth. Just install everything you can with the Installer and you'll be fine.

The FSO upgrade is far more than just a graphics update, although it does update the graphics considerably. It also adds flexibility to the engine, which makes it much easier to mod. Modding the game is very fun and simpler than most others.
I'd reccomend downloading a few user-created campaigns (the Installer automatically comes with a few of the better ones), but I'd also definitely play the main campaign first. You should add FSO before playing the main campaign though... it'll look far better. ;)
If you have any questions, you might want to read Kara's All-Knowing FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html), or just ask around here. We'll be happy to help.

And its not bad to say you've never played the game before. The more fans FreeSpace has the better...so invite youre friends! Also, download and play the FreeSpace Port first (included in the installer). It's the original FreeSpace campaign.

Thanks guys you :)

If you want to play the game, here is a rough timeline of some of the mods:
Cardinal Spear (remake) The FreeSpace Port Team
FreeSpace Port, :v:
Rain on Ribos 4 (set halfway through FS1), 0rph3u5
Silent Threat, :v:
FreeSpace 2, :v:
The Procyon Insurgency, CP5670
Derelict (remake of original), Blaise Russel
Warzone, unknown
Inferno Release 1, The Inferno Team
If you want to play as earth after the jump node collapses you can either play:
Inferno: Alliance, The Inferno Team
Sol: A History, Blaise Russel
Blue Planet, Darius (???)
BtRL is a Battlestar Galactica mod for FS2, they have released a demo, and you can also get demos for Wing Commander Saga and Blackwater Operations. There are a lot more campaigns, but I don't know where they fit in. See Skippy's campaign list (look under "Hosted Sites" at the top of the page)

Probably belongs in tech support, but that won't stop me from answering :p
Which site did you go to? The one you want is http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/ (which seems to work fine, just checked it), not the old PXO site. And if you're in doubt about any part of the registration or setup, there's a comprehensive getting started guide in the Wiki's multiplayer section. If that still won't do it, feel free to ask further and I'll see if I can walk you through it :)
Also, just a quick note: It's generally considered bad form to repeat the same question in multiple topics. You're new here, so you're excused, but it's good to know for the future.

EDIT: Shade beat me to it... :p
But here's the link to Game Warden's FS2NetD guide:

You probably want the latest version of the SCP, too. Follow the directions in my Walkthrough (http://tinyurl.com/2xuhj2) for Turey's Installer, if you have DSL or Cable (in other words, fast) Internet. This makes your graphics look much better... be sure to follow all directions, though.

Affirmative. PXO was decommissioned long ago. You need to register on fs2netd.game-warden.com, and you need the latest version of FreeSpace Open, or the SCP. This would be 3.6.9.
To set up your multiplayer account ingame, once you create an FS2Net account and get FS_Open 3.6.9, follow Shade's link to get flying.
And are the rumors of PXO's forthcoming resurrection true?

And are the rumors of PXO's forthcoming resurrection true?
Dunno if we'll be able to get www.pxo.net, but the lobby is making a comeback very soon.

What's the difference?
