I've looked for Derek Smart's posts, but I cant find his username. Did someone delete his account or did he even register in the first place?

He registered... only for the "fun" of annoying the #^$* out of HLP, it seems. I don't think he's banned, just that he doesn't come here anymore (and good riddance!).
I believe the majority of his posts are in the "Derek Smart wants to develope FS3" Classic thread.
-
For a minute there, I thought you meant D3r3k... :nervous:
-
why bother even asking, you know this will just resurrect him.
-
Where did he go?
Hopefully as far away from here, and the FreeSpace IP, as possible.
-

Yes, all of his posts are in that thread. And where did he go? He decided that he has said everything he has to say to this community. If he came back, he'd only once again tell us that we suck and that we are responsible for the failure of FS2, economically speaking. So good riddance.
-
He actually commented on the BtRL Demo. It was pretty damn funny.
-
It would be funny as **** if any body necro'd one of the threads he was in
DEREK SMART/FART MADE IT FINALLY!!!
RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES
I'm SO PSYCHED!!! IM GOING TO BUY IT

Well, we keep our distances from each other as far as boards etc are concerned, and probably for the best. He doesn't like our 'style' we don't like his, end of story really.
Still, he does far more to advertise us than we do him, so I suppose we at least owe him gratitude there ;)
I know people feel the need to bring this up every once in a while, hence why I haven't locked this thread, however, I do wish people on both sides of the debate would just get over it.
-
There's something about him in that blasphemous Enclyclopaedia Dramatica

[BtRL is] rubbish, but don't take my word for it. See for yourself. (http://forums.avault.com/showpost.php?p=304441&postcount=47)
Those prissy lil' girls in their frocks and oversized undies who were harrassing me over FS3, can continue playing with their sub-par and sub-standard FS2 TCs, hacks and whatnot. They'll never - ever - see another Freespace title in their pathetic life times. (http://forums.avault.com/showpost.php?p=303501&postcount=5)
The TC and mods [based on FS2] are going to remain at the bottom of the gaming food chain because they are not worthy anything and can't compete in any way, shape or form. Hence the reason they are free. (http://forums.avault.com/showpost.php?p=304349&postcount=41)
-
I don't even know who he is, and I want to hurt him.Bad.
-
I don't know where he gets off talking the crap that he does. He does not show the degree of professionalism that one would expect from a developer. Those screen shots he posted of the new space Sim (since he didn't get the rights to Freespace 3) he's working on are not all that impressive. They honestly look too much like a cartoon to me. At this point I think the community should just ignore him, maybe he'll just fade away and be forgotten.
-
I don't know where he gets off talking the crap that he does.
Apparently, he just enjoys infuriating forum communities:
"Sometimes when I get online, and it's quiet, and I see something that attracts my attention, I'll post just to piss these guys off. That's why I do it. Because I'm in a good mood that day, I go in there and I start trouble."
Actual quote from him, yep. Source. (http://www.3000ad.com/press/ds_interview_cgw0401.jpg) And he wonders why people dislike him so...
-
Anyone know when he was last active at Avault? He still persistently keeps the 'Ph.D' in his signature. I suppose it's okay. I mean I could call myself the prime minister of Norway on the internets and even in that case no one would give a damn.
-
Derek's latest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5YlR07nGYM).
-
Actually, I'm the Prime Minister of Norway.
-
You know, I heard they wanted the Airlocks in BSG a bit more... realistic... shall we sign up Derek Smart for it?
-
Maybe for playtesting, Joshua. ;)

Saw that months ago... but it's still amusing today.

Derek Smart is having a load of bliss in his own fart perfume right now (he's sealed in an airtight room right now farting). That's why we haven't heard from him in a long time. You wonder why he's an asshole (what was that city in southpark where people were farting into wine glasses and that cloud layer of smug destroyed the city?).
-
San Francisco
-
Looking at all of the FS3 controversy, the Avault thread, and his website, I must say that he is the biggest ass I have ever seen. I wish I was here for the FS3 thread. :blah: The was he insulted Aldo, and the rest of the HLPers on Avault even thought they were perfectly reasonable.
-

wow, he nails the thread with a 6 month bump then preaches 'net etiquette.....
-
You know, If he thinks that all of the mods suck, then why doesn't he make one himself?
-

Yeah. But no, dsmrat's pride is way too big for him to devolve into the level of people involved in FSO. Nah, maybe if he, in all his wisdom and might, deemed it necessary, he might create yet another UniversalBattleKnightCruiserBlade3000Combat to really show what he can do and why he's better than all of us combined.
-
I bet I can model better than him. :P
Some FS2 fan needs to kick his ass just to make him act like a real game developer.
:v: was a real developer group.
-
Speaking about kicking ass. If there wasn't a law or something, I'd put together a group to go and beat the hell out of this dude. And possibly burn his house down... nah, that'd be a waste of resources.
Or at the very least, if I knew where he lived, I'd move somewhere close by, followed by going there and sticking bananas 'n stuff into the exhaust pipe of his car on a daily basis. Or maybe I could deliver defunct Coke machines right on his doorstep. That'd be... dumb, I know, but still. Stupid humour is still humour.
-
I sometimes wonder how he manages to remain in business. Are his games actually commercial successes? Who publishes them? And are they one man shows or does he have other developers working under him?
-
I heard that Interplay hosted like 3 of his games.
I bet that is why they went bankrupt.
-
Wikipedia seems to suggest some publishers but the question remains: why the hell? If I've understood correctly, during the last 18 years he has made the same game 5 times. And people buy it! Why? Are there really so many people who like space games where you're thrown somewhere in the known universe with the objective 'Do something'?
Oh, and in the 'Derek Smart wants to develop...' thread he stated that he has a team. That must've been a historical moment. Usually it's just he who is making the games.
-
Because people will buy anything.
-
I've always wondered what it's like to be Derek Smart.
Unfortunately, there isn't enough room up his ass for both of us.

Oh, a good one!

Just barely. He hyped Battlecruiser so much that people actually bought the game, but then couldn't sell the game because Take Two didn't do enough advertising or something.
He doesn't like our TCs because they're done oh so much better than his games, and they look current generation.

He really is the complete epitome of a sore loser, once you really think about it.
I think he really doesn't get the burden of admitting that he oh just might be wrong. Just makes me wonder sometimes...
-
Oh ****--I don't remember starting that.

Crap--I don't have any recollection of even being at that forum.
Great.... :doubt:
-
What's with the guy who kept saying "GORE!!!"
-
I think it would be funny if we started acting like members of his forum and hype our own releases. Oh and since when did Aldo want the FS license to die with FS2?

That and the fact that our TCs are free, whereas he has to make a living with his games. Really makes you think. Somehow it is possible for him to stay in business with ugly, buggy and way too complex games, when at the same time courageous people here make positively stunning and entertaining TCs from the FSO engine, for free.
On a side note, I found it ironic, when a while back I visited his site and decided to take a look at his personal bio pdf (don't ask why). And what do you know? The damn thing totally crashed my pdf reader.
-
actually the only policy of his i like is that he makes games free once they ran their shelf life (not that i've played any nor want to, its just a friendly business face if you dont see the coke machine raping moster behind it)

That site is has a link for it in wikipedia too on the bc3k entry.
EDIT: For giggles i'm going to actually play battlecruiser milenium. I'll probably smart my pants though.
-
Hey when you done, tell us how [sarcasm]good[/sarcasm] it was. :P
-
It [Battlecruiser 3000AD] employed outdated graphics, MIDI music, a cryptic interface, and contained almost no documentation - a huge problem since the commands were unintuitive (e.g. Alt-Ctrl-E to fire weapons).
Alt-Ctrl-E for firing weapons? What the hell was he on when he worked on the user interface?
-
What ever the hell he is on 24 seven!
(Meth, Coke, Weed, Retarded Pills, and Beer).
-

Our games are free from the start, and the only reason he does this is because no one buys them, so he releases them anyway because he isn't losing money by doing it anyway.
EDIT: I know one thing that never happened:
:welcome: DSmart [3000AD]!

He is the one person you do not welcome.

He probably uses them like demos, i.e. a way to entice people to buy his more recent games, as each of his games is essentially just an upgraded version of the previous one.

let me correct that for you:
"He probably uses them like demos, i.e. a way to entice people to buy his more recent games, as each of his games is essentially just a regurgitated version of the previous one."

Good luck figuring out what the hell you have to do. I couldn't even figure out how to get the damn ship to move. All I figured out was how to switch to a space suit.
-
You MUST read the manuals to play his games. And if you don't, you're an idiot for trying. Its just a fact of a 3000AD game. I totally disagree with that from a game design standpoint, but it works well enough for him. People do buy them.
Derek loves a good flame war, he's not any worse than many netizens, he just has more money and attracts hate like a magnet.
;)
-
As far as the whole manual thing is concerned, it needs to be remembered that what Derek is aiming at is massive in scope, you couldn't just sit down at a D&D game and know how to play instinctively, that's not how those sort of games work, even Neverwinter Nights had a ridiculously complex manual, though most of it you don't need to read unless you're really obsessive about the game.
I'll reserve my comments on the outcome of those attempts at massive scope, but, ironically enough, I do understand what Derek is trying to do, and it's not a terrible idea, regardless of execution, or, indeed, the personality of the writer.
