Newly downloaded and installed (this weekend) using Turey's Installer (outstanding, thanks).
FS Retail runs fine.
FSOpen, not so much. Using Open GL, I can watch the opening cutscene, but then Freespace needs to close. It works in D3D, sort of, but you know about that.
I have a new install of OpenAL and the audio device is set to "generic software". I've tried simplifying the graphics seetings but nothing has helped.
Major upgrade on the old case: Asus M2A-VM, Athlon 64 X2 4200, 2GB Crucial memory @ 667Mh, and (yeah, I know) ATI Xpress 1250 onboard graphics. Old WD 40 GB hard drive and a big beautiful LCD. Windows XP Home SP2 and all patches.
I know I need a new video card but surely it should run at least a bit. Tom's Hardware (October 1) rates the Xpress 1250 equivalent to Ti 4600 and better than my old 9500 Pro.
Any suggestions?

What version graphics drivers?
-
This happens to me sometimes, most notably when I first played INFA. As Kara said, go get the latest drivers, they turned out to be my problem. (I think)
Oh, and :welcomeorange:

Catalyst 7.9 - from last week. Thanks Cole...
-
You mean you just downloaded them or already had them?
ATI FTW!!!2900 series notwithstanding
-
Already had them. I just put this computer together on the weekend, so all new drivers...yesterday, cause that was the weekend here.
And ATI is not THAT bad!
-
If you get performance issues after this is all sorted out, then assign FreeSpace Open to a single core... not sure what the prob is, though.. can you run a debug build, and attach your \data\fs2_open.log file that will be created after it crashes?
-
Attached as suggested - I hope.

Does it start if you disable mediavps?
-
Off topic, but I meant that all of ATI is great except for the 2900.
-
Same error message with or without mods, on the debug version or not. This might be the night for a new video card, and it will probably not be an ATI, Cole.
-
I wouldn't suggest getting a new card, of any brand, unless yours is seriously outdated. If you do get a new one, get a 640 GTS (if you're in the high-end). It may not be the drivers or the card, anyway.
-
Meh... get a BFG.... (nVidia) www.bfgtech.com
-
I needed a card anyway - on-board graphics, right?
I was looking under $100 - no 640 GS for me.
XFX GeForce 7900GS XT 256MB 256BIT - more card than I needed but for $99 hard to resist. Mail order so it will be a week or so.
Now back on-topic - can anyone make anything of that .log I posted? It might as well be Swahili for all it means to me.
-
Well apart from listing your GPU it doesnt really provide anything that would instantly solve this problem - not at least on brief glimpses.
Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 1024x768 with 32-bit color...
Initializing WGL...
Requested WGL Video values = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, double-buffer: 1
Actual WGL Video values = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, double-buffer: 1
OpenGL Vendor : ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL Renderer : ATI Radeon X1200 Series x86/MMX/3DNow!/SSE2
OpenGL Version : 2.0.6847 WinXP Release
One other possibility is that as it seems to crash while it searches and/or creates pilot files would be that you are lacking some of the subdirectories - like 'single' - in the data\players directory. But as you already said that retail works then that is very unlikely to be the cause.

Follow this guide (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,49606.0.html) and look for an incorrect checksum on Spark_fs2.vp or Spark_hi_fs2.vp
The next stage should be loading in the ani cursor and it's failing on that point. Given that this is the first time the game actually checks you have any retail VPs it's likely that an error in one of them is responsible for your problems.
I believe running Turey's installer again and telling it to install the retail files to your current FS2 folder will checksum your files again before it does anything. But unless someone confirms that before you see this I'd suggest following that guide.

The end of this story:
on Wednesday evening I ordered that video card from NCIX in Vancouver. On Friday it arrived at my door in Ajax (just outside Toronto). 2800 miles in a day and a half for $10 shipping.. That's remarkable service from NCIX and Canada Post.
FS2 Open looks gorgeous - with all settings on high, and runs smoothly (so does everything else I've tried).
So I guess it was simply ATI 's on-board video not supporting that version of OpenGL.
I still have a bug - my targeting brackets are floating away! - but I'll post in Mantis.
Thanks to all for suggestions.

Uh oh, sounds like someone is playing in widescreen again.
-
On-board video was probably your problem. Several people have had problems.
-
dammit!! I always wondered why OpenGL didn't work on my notebook. now i know it: it's my f*cking onboard Xpress 1150 graphics chip  :hopping: :
