Title: Lightspeed's Nebula Dosen't Work
Post by: Retsof on October 09, 2007, 06:14:13 pm
I've tried putting the vp file in various folders, when that didn't work, I extracted the images and saved them in various folders, yes they were pcx.  Also, I had ran derelict as a mod and it worked fine, but when I wanted to go back to normal I had to run the mediavp folder as a mod to get the FSO graphics again, as when I clicked "no mod" it was retail graphics.  Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Which folders did you try putting them in? I'd think if you just stuck 'em in with the Medias, it would work fine.

As for having to select Medias as a mod for FSO graphics, that's exactly how it should work. Selecting "no mod" tells it that it should not load anything beyond the stock VP's. So there is no problem there.

The ls_neb.vp is in the mediavps folder.

With no ill intentions... that sounds rather horrible way of shooting trouble. :shaking:

BTW, why would the Lightspeed nebulae be in PCX of all formats?

Anyway, if I interpreted right the problem is that you don't see LS Nebulae in retail FS2 campaign, right? The solution to that is here:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42817.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42817.0.html)

That's the modified version of FS2 campaign which uses the new backgrounds. Read, download and follow instructions (I have that in separate mod folder named FS2_Lightspeed, but I guess you could put it to MediaVP's as well).

And I suggest you undo anything you did with "various folders", then check that the LS Nebulae work from the VP with Derelict (which worked fine), then use the "Lightspeed-enabled" version of FS2 campaign from the thread I linked to.

If I misinterpreted the problem, please correct me. :)

Sorry for the vagueness, I meant that I can't get them in FRED.  Oh, and the various folders were the ones like data/effects and mediavps, nothing too unreasonable.

Ah, okay... well, you would be well adviced to keep away from the data directory, it's too easy to mess with... other than that, I have not much experience in FREDding department at all, but I can't see why MEdiaVP's wouldn't work...

...you did enable mediaVP's with the FRED command line? And all the high-poly ships from MediaVP's appear in FRED?

Well, in case he isn't familiar with FRED's command line:

FRED will not load whatever mod you have in the Launcher. AFAIK, the Launcher will do nothing whatsoever to FRED. So, you have to get FRED to load a mod in a different way.

Right-click FREDOpen and create a shortcut. Right-click the shortcut and select "Properties". In here you will see a target box that lists the location of the executable the shortcut links to. At the end of the string, put a space, then: "-mod <folder name>". This will tell FRED to load that folder as a mod whenever it is accessed through this shortcut.

I have a folder full of FRED shortcuts, actually: with names like "INF_FredOpen" or "Transcend_FREDOpen" and the like, so I know which shortcut will load which mod.

So if you stick LS's nebulae into the Mediavp's folder, and tell FRED to load it, then it should work.

Ah, well now I fixed it so it won't yell at me about HTL mode anymore, but it says "unrecognized command line parameter "-modmediavps".

Wrong syntax:

Code: [Select]
-mod mediavps,othermod,secondmod,thirdmod
A space before the first, and the rest separated with a comma.

Getting close, I can feel it, high-poly models still don't show up and still don't have anything new in bitmaps. Do i need to do something in the mediavps\data folder, because a missions folder has popped up in it.

Do you have the nebulae defined in stars.tbl? Or does the LS nebulae vp file come with table file?

Um... I think I found the problem I have with all this stuff,... I cant find any of my tbl. files.  They have to be somewhere or the game wouldn't run, right? :nervous:

Actually, I think I deleted them  :beamz:.  Any chance I could get a copy of someone's tables that haven't been tampered with?  This happened before I had FSO and I had downloaded a campaign, and, in my ignorance, had replace the tables with the ones from said campaign.  They messed up the normal game, so I deleted them.

Well, the most important table files are included in the vps, most importantly in the Root_fs2.vp. In the default situation you shouldn't even have any table files in any of the folders within the root freespace directory.

If you want the LS Nebulae with a table file, either use the link provided by MP-Ryan or click the Useful Stuff link in my sig and get them from there. In both cases you'll get a vp file, which includes the nebulae and also a proper table file for using them. Meaning that you just stick the vp to your mediavps folder, preferrably.
