Post by: starlord on October 10, 2007, 10:31:15 am
Hi, anybody heard of a campaign or MOD called "over the top"?

Nico cancelled it some years back as it was too ambitious.

No, he cancelled it due to a lack of FREDders. :(

A lack of FREDders? Now thats really a shame. I always thought that I were is no type of modder that is as abundant as a FREDder. Seems that I was wrong. Well they certainly had no lack of textured models.

There are lots of FREDders but they all insist on working on their own campaigns which rarely see the light of day rather than teaming up for the big projects.

I s'pose I could do some FREDing, my campaign idea is moving at the speed of a glacier anyway. :doubt:  Just point me where I'm needed.  Preferably not model intensive, as my internet is pathetic and I only go to the library every few weeks.

Side note: what kind of Internet service do you have?  What's your results from this (http://speedtest.net/) site?  (there is a link after it finishes with a code for posting the results in forums)

I'd figure that it's table modders. Table modding is really easy, and IMHO is a bit more worthwhile than FREDing (think of it as a "change in the game" to "work put into it" ratio).

@Kara: You figure most of the FREDers don't really think of themselves as capable of too much, or are too nervous to commit to anybody else's project in fear of them getting lazy. And still wanting to do a bit more than a random line of single missions no one will play, they make a campaign that is supposedly a "casual" one to justify either their feared lack of FRED skills or lack of completion.

From what I can see, it's a confidence thing.

Yes you can get results much faster if you tablemod but I think most people are more interested in campaigns than tablemods because it's so easy to make your own. It is simply a question of experience skill and the abillity to overcome ones lazyness.  All things that I do not possess.
I also don't know of any mods that need FREDers at the moment.

Post a thread saying "I'm a FREDder looking for a campaign to work on"

Post an example mission to prove you know how

Watch everyone fight over you. :D

Simple fact is that I can't think of many mods who couldn't use a new FREDder or two. The thing is that few teams want to take on a completely green newbie because quite often they'll only stick around for a couple of weeks. The FRED Academy was supposed to plug that gap and give the newbies a chance to contribute to the community while getting the experience they needed to prove that a mod should snap them up.

Unfortunately what happened was that people did a couple of mission at most and then went off to make their own campaigns. Which led me to the conclusion that people make their own campaigns (even in the face of arguments why they should join a mod instead) simply because they want to tell their own story.

I don't think there's much wrong with that, Karajorma. The best stories- Procyon Insurgency, Transcend, and Homesick- were told by people who did their own FREDing and came up with their own ideas. Team projects require that everyone share a common interest, which usually only happens in the TC remakes of popular videogames and such like SoL/BTRL/WCS, which are interesting because of their mainstream appeal but not particularly original. If you team together a lot of FREDers for a campaign you get a average story and average missions, with few people except the project leaders really caring about their work. You need to be enthusiastic about what you're working on, which is why people prefer to do their own thing, even if most of the projects are never released. Better campaigns > more campaigns.
