Title: UT3 demo available
Post by: CP5670 on October 13, 2007, 11:05:59 am
Anyone else playing this? It unofficially hit the internet yesterday, although it seems to have been leaked a few days in advance and there weren't any decent multiplayer servers up last I checked. You can still play with the bots.

http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/11252/Unreal+Tournament+3+Demo

I generally like the game a lot. I was a huge fan of UT many years ago and (like many such people) was disappointed by UT2004's gameplay, but Epic seems to have fixed many of the balancing problems in that. The weapons are now much more powerful in general and the vehicles don't make players on foot obsolete like they used to. In general, the gameplay is somewhere between that of UT and UT2004.

The game looks outstanding and also seems to be running well on a wide range of hardware. Although it's worth turning down some graphical settings in any case; the bloom actually inhibits the gameplay since you can't see weapon shots quite as easily.

If the ingame motion feels weird, there is a setting in one of the ini files that fixes it. Also, you can remove the PhysX thing the demo installs. I don't know what the point of that is, but it doesn't appear to be used by the game.

Sounds nice, downloading.
BTW thanks for the link.

Downloaded it yesterday, not bad at all, very nice looking.

My only real complaint is that, unlike the original where you could jump on pretty much anything, there seem to be some areas that are protected by collision boxes, this means you are left jumping up and down like an idiot trying to jump on something you can't jump on.

After playing the game, my impression can be summed up in one word.

Meh.

There's not much really 'new' in there, though the Darkwalker is interesting in the animation department, however, it reduces that Deathmatch into 'first one in the Darkwalker wins'. It's nice to see that the Teleporter has been changed to a Back to the Future-esque skateboard, since it was a pain in the ass, but on the other end of the scale, the Flak-Cannon still owns at short range, but the alternate fire has been crippled speed-wise, this, as a self-confessed Flak-Monkey, makes me unhappy :(

cool, gotta check it out.

I will say this, the AI seems to have improved to a degree on the Bots, at least Deathmatch results are a lot closer now, no more '20-0' victories on medium difficulty, though this could be partly down to the fact that the weapons have been upped, and the healthpacks nerfed.

Same here, I probably used the flak cannon's alternate fire more often than any other single weapon in the original UT. The primary attack seems to have a narrower field of fire though, which partly makes up for it.

I agree that the walker seems unbalanced. The bots trade places in it often, but I got it at one point and stayed alive for a long time until the end of the game. That is more of a map design issue than anything else though, as the walker is unique to that map. I think the collision box issue you mentioned earlier might also be a bug in a particular map.

The translocator is still there in the other modes. It's only replaced by the hoverboard in maps with vehicles (in VCTF and Warfare modes). I think the idea was to make it easier for players without vehicles to get around the large maps quickly, but they're very useful for CTF since unlike the translocator, you can use them while carrying the flag. I never saw the bots using it though.

if you have xp64 like I do, then you'll need to download this fix:

Hoverboard flag running seems suicidal.  A single shot knocks you off the board, makes you drop the flag, and sends you sprawling to the ground immobile for a moment, during which the entire enemy teams which will no doubt be trailing your Marty McFly wannabe ass will grab the flag and pop a cap or a thousand in you.

I'm hyped for the game though, just for the campaign mode.  Frankly, online multiplayer is only remotely fun if you're actually pretty good at the game.  While I enjoyed UT, I wasn't all that good at it, which made online play less fun and more "Oh look, dead again."

I did it several times against the bots in the demo level. You need to use the map as cover to some degree, but it works very well. Actually, those were the only flag captures anyone got in those games. I guess that has always been a problem with UT bots in CTF; they are far better at defense than offense compared to human players, so many bot games end with a 0-0 scoreline.

I am mainly interested in the online portion of the game. The last multiplayer game I really got into and played competitively for over a year was UT, and nothing else (as far as multiplayer games go) has held my interest for a long period of time since then. This might just change that.

A question..

Has anyone else found that the game doesn't save their altered key mappings etc?

I keep having to remap my controls every time the demo starts up. It doesn't take long but it's a bit of a pain. I don't suppose there are any tutorials floating about that'll tell me how to edit the .INI files directly? I don't want to much things up...

Sorry for the quality, I was expecting that h264 codec would be recognize by stage6.

I get the same problem. It seems to be a bug in the demo. You can probably change them manually in the \Engine\Config\BaseInput.ini file. It should be fairly obvious how it works.

Another minor irritation is the unskippable intro movies, which has become common in games these days, but you can just delete the movie files and it works fine.

I don't have any problem with losing key mappings and skipping intro movies. For the Intro, just click to skip each video.

Bah, I tried just about every key on the keyboard but somehow never used the mouse. :p Although unskippable movies appear in the majority of games these days and it's a fairly routine thing to have to deal with them.

I was quite surprised when I played the demo. I have seen movies about it and allways thought the gameplay would be to fast for me. So I started the game with mixed feelings and have been killed very quickly the first matches but when you get used to it, it became more and more fun to play and getting killed quickly wasn't a problem at all since the others fall at the same speed.

Overall I suprisingly like the game. I also tried Call of Duty4 demo and while its true that the gameplay is quite intense its not exactly my type of gameplay. Also is there some kind of autoaiming running in the background? Every shot a kill is a bit strange.....ok mostly I just scope around a corner and wait to blow someones head.

Both games are graphical very nice IMO....I think I will stay with UT3 thought...its just more fun. The last time I had fun with a shooter was Serious Sam on a LAN.

After playing it for a couple of days, I'll give it a thumbs up, for the main part they seem to have kept most of the good stuff. It looks good, very good in fact, and runs really smoothly.

I'll admit there are concerns, but since I'm not playing the full breadth of the game, I'll wait until it's finished before I make final judgement, but so far I'd say that UT3 is certainly on my list of 'to buy'.

UT was one of the few games that I used to play online, mainly because there was no time for anyone to start typing things like 'U N00b!!1! I pwned joo!', they'd probably die twice in that time, and UT3 keeps up that pace, so I might well look at actually venturing into some online stuff once it comes out.

seems to me that the vehicles in ut2004 were more fun to drive. the vehicles and weapons also didnt change that much. some of those weapons have been around sence the first unreal. the graphics were nice but it seems it was all post process. the graphics were pretty good, but they could be better. in general i like the engine but i dont like the game. quake wars has gameplay which is by far more fun. in general this iteration of games isnt looking too good. i want good single player games as well, not just multi-only games. i miss games like quake 2 which had really awesome single player for its day, and had a complete suite of multiplayer modes. this demo failed to convince me to buy the game.

Actually UT3 is apparently supposed to have a story-based campaign mode, in addition to the regular deathmatch against bots.

On my end, the demo definitely convinced me to buy it, I can't wait :)

Also, on that note, anyone here want to share their in-game names so we can add to each others friends lists? Mine's UnknownTarget

I'm kind of disappointed by this, really. Something about it just feels off, but I can't put my finger on it. It feels closer to Quake 3 Arena than UT to me, and maybe it's just the map but CTF seems far less fun than it is without vehicles.

But then I liked UT2K4 over the original game, so what do I know.

I haven't decided. :p Either CP5670 or 142857. I used the latter in my UT99 days and in some other games as well, but I'm known by the former just about everywhere else so I might go back to that now.

well itf it has a single player mode. i did see a campaign option that you couldnt select. but i just assumed it would be the same as with the original ut where you just run the whole tournament. now if its single like the first unreal, where you have traditional sp gameplay. then that would be pretty cool.

IIRC the storyline is something like you were a miner on a colony, but the aliens (the things that control the dark walkers) attacked the colony, destroying everything and everyone including your family. You joined the tournament, but then the aliens come back out of nowhere and attack the tournament or somesuch.

Not exactly Shakespeare, but better than nothing. :)

Everytime I create an online profile with the Demo, even though it stores all the info, it still tells me that I've entered the wrong password, kinda narking me now....
