Does anyone know of any good missions that show off the absolute coolness factor of FS2? I.e. huge ships duking it out, big battles, objective based gameplay, etc etc? I'd like to show the game off to some people here, but most missions are too slow or not very exciting to do it.
-
How about the FS2 demo? That really hooked me, particularly the second mission.
-
Yes... and that is available from Turey's, too. :)
-
I forget what it's called, but it's the first encounter with the Shivans and the Knossos in FS2.
-
Its called ''A Lion at the Door''. I like that my mission a lot mostly for the briefing. That music track is just killer for that mission.
-
The mission needs to have a stab of fear.. ;7 A sense of awe and terror of the Shivans and horror at your (human & vasudan aka "good guys' ") predicament. :drevil: Make them wet their pants. Well, settle for raising the hair on the back of their neck, then. ;)
-
In that mission , the Cain gives some fun to the destroyer . Yea , it's a good preview for someone new . But totally spoils the begining where , out of nowhere , those red fellas show up and humiliate's GTVA .
-
You could try the dream mission from Derelict, I was too busy looking at the silhouetted pirate ship to realise that that big pretty light meant something big just jumped in. :eek2:

awesome mission, choose it. A second proposal would be "Rebels & Renegades".
But there is even a better option:
LET THEM WATCH THE FS2 INTRO ! (until the name is shown, not the whole one). It's freaking cool
-
No, not the Intro! If you want to bring here people, show them the power of FS Open! The Intro has graphics that are...uhm..."far from average" even for 1999 standards(Colony Wars had wonderful CG cutscenes, and two of the three chapters of that saga came out before FS2...).
I suggest:
"A Lion at the Door"
"The Great Hunt"
"Feint! Parry! Riposte!"
In fact, they're all in the Demo :P

How 'bout The Sixth Wonder? That has always been quite thrilling, at least in my opinion. Though there is a small spoiler with the, um... *cough*Colossus. But nonetheless, a good piece of 'defend a station from warships and bombers'.
-
Sixth Wonder isn't a very good mission, especially to show off FreeSpace.
a) The Calypso is attacked by the Cato by mistake.
b) Epsilon has only 1 fighter which departs early in the mission (a bit strange).
c) There are a number of bugs (including the Manheim can depart with station bug).
d) The Colossus, when it jumps in, sometimes fails to fry the Hawkwood (this happened to me, it fired too early and its beams missed the Hawkwood, it took another minute or so to power back up again)
e) There are bugs in the briefingn (one of the wings is called "Bandit")
-
...true. But if
-the Colossus remembers/manages to shoot the Hawkwood down
-the player knows beforehand to go and disarm the Cato a bit
-you ignore the remaining bugs
it works.
-
1) More often than not, the right thing will happen, so no probs there.
2) The Cato fires around 2 seconds into the mission, sometimes hitting the Calypso by mistake when it tries to hit the station.
3) Yeah, yeah.
-
Well... "Feint! Parry! Riposte!"? That was already suggested. I like that too. In fact, I like all Suicide Kings missions. Partially due to Cordova. Now there's an authority with some personality.
-
You shouldn't mind if a "show mission" spoils the plot or not. The best thing of FreeSpace is the community and all user-made campaigns/MODs. So goes for GTVA Vs. Shivans, close to Endgame and nebula missions.
-
If not for the big spoilers, I would recommend a 'fixed' version of "Their Finest Hour."
-
And I wouldn't recommend it. That mission may be great for us, but is surely is a "meh" for any sci-fi fan apparently interested on FS.
-
Hmm... It's got big ships killing each other... But not a good display of FS2. True.
-
I think I'll agree with the spoiler part. After all, back when FS1 hit the stores, a Finnish gaming magazine spoiled at least half of the plot and events in the review. As with several other games. And that is probably necessary. Who'd buy a game if they have absolutely no idea of what's going on.
-
The Magazines I read(I used to read)didn't "spoil", but somewhat suggested many of the main parts of a plot. "There will be more enemies" or something like that can be interpretated as "A new alien species" or "There will be a rebellion". But nothing was spoiled. At least not here!
And for the reasons I mentioned before, the plot can be "sacrificed".
-
I recently got a friend of mine interested in FSO, and I did it with Into the Lion's Den. That Sath coming straight at him got him interested real quick... That mission grabs you just for the sheer shock value. There's nothing quite like a 6km long warship hurtling at you at over 100m/s.
Since then, he's nearly beaten the retail campaign and has registered here on HLP.
-
It sucks all my friends hate flying games :(
-
Purely for showing off the engine and the concept of huge corvettes firing beams at one another while you dogfight in between them, you could show people the Earth/Minbari War demo in TBP. It's not FS2, but it hits at the essence of it.
Also any number of Derelict's larger battles are pretty spectacular.
-
Who'd buy a game if they have absolutely no idea of what's going on.
Me. I just love it when the story surprises you completely. And by the way, this was the case with FS2. I just knew it was a space shooter and it was received well by reviewers.
-
I like that to some point, too. Just that I would like to know at leat the general idea. Are we talking about World War 2 or some space age or what? Are there other species and so on. The review I mentioned earlier just spoiled most of FreeSpace 2's plot. They managed to mention within two pages that the Terrans and Vasudans have been fighting for a long time, when suddenly these Shivans arrive and start whippin' the other two around. There was also a screen of the Lucifer jumping in thorught the jump node in Playing Judas, with a note how it was thrilling when you were flying a captured Shivan fighter when suddenly the Shivan command ship appears almost next to you.

How about a mission that shows off many of the SCP features? Doesn't that sound interesting?
-
That sound fabulous... :D But if they're new, they won't know the difference between a Retail and an SCP feature. ... it's just part of the same package to them. ;)
-
by the way, do you have any mission for that in mind ?
writing an own one wouldn't be the optimal solution for showing of FS. It has to be a fully voiceacted mission.
-
How about a compilation of three or four missions from FSPort, FS2, and a few mods, perhaps Derelict and Inferno or something? Have each one open with a statement that it is a sample mission from that campaign... but adding the models etc... you'd have to be pretty crafty about it.
-
How about the missions dealing with the demise of the NTF? Lots and lots of capitol ships to take down, and the firefights are spectacular. Remote Beam Cannons for the win. If I was going to show off FS2 to somebody, I'd probably go with that and the second mission for the 242nd.
-
I think bomber missions are too hard to get used to--I had a heck of a time when I first played. Anyways--how about the end of Act 1, where you're attacking that cruiser to lure the Repulse out? Then, the Big C jumps in and fries the Repulse. It's got some great dog-fighting and enough action. When they're bored, turn up the difficulty. It might be too hard, however... the Coward AI setting is surprisingly hard to beat without taking major damage.

The last battle between the Colossus and the Sathanas. the air of 'Aw ****. there goes our miracle' really gets ya.
