First off; please forgive me if this has been addressed a thousand times before. I'm not exactly sure what the technical nature of my problem is and as such was unsure of what to search after in the forum.
Alright, I’ll try to describe my problem… I just fell in love with Freespace again after watching some neat youtube videos that I happened to stumble across. The new updated graphics and engine looked smashing and so I managed to find my way here and got hold of the Freespace Open launcher via http://www.fsoinstaller.com/
I got everything working just fine. The game looks a lot better then vanilla Freespace 2, but I feel like I’m still missing a few of the bells and whistles that are in the previously mentioned online videos.
The main thing I seem to be missing is the colored lighting effects from for example this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaYe7DrBTSY). It’s very distinguishable about 40 seconds in with the shot of the Fenris cruiser that’s lit up bright red by the color of it’s surroundings. This does not happen in my version. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjyUB1VemWE) video also clearly shows several scenes with beautiful lighting on the capital ships in the mission.
In general, the videos I’ve seen tend to have a much darker feel to them then my version of the game. I’ll give you an example. This is a screenshot from my game, I hope it conveys what I’m trying to say:

As you can see (I hope) the model is extremely bright, and does not seem to take on the color of it’s surroundings at all.
Am I missing some advanced colored lighting effect addon per chance? I’ve checked and my mediavps directory seems to be alright and it’s been selected under the MODs tab in the launcher. All graphical features available to me have been enabled…
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks a bunch!
[edit]Oh, and I'm using Direct3D on a Radeon based chipset.

Well well, what do you know. Switching to OpenGL fixed all my problems. Sorry for bothering you chaps. :/

Stay with OpenGL. D3D has a few glitches and bugs that have been fixed in OGL so it's the API of choice.

/me pokes karajorma.
:welcomeblue:
Enjoy your stay! Don't forget to check out BtRL, WCS, and TBP (BattleStar Galactica: Beyond the Red Line, Wing Commander Saga, and The Babylon Project, respectively)... check the "hosted sites" and "external links" at the top of the page.. they are in there somewheres.
Also: be sure that if you are playing the FS2 campaign, that you select the mediavps mod. If you are playing FSPort (aka FS1), then the FSPort mod selects mediavps for you. ;)
