Now introducing the first ship I've ever created. My post in the Flagship thread inspired me. However I though to start with something small first. Like:
The Aerospace Transporter Bus Model 3 (ATBM-3)
The ATBM-3 a small scale freighter designed to carry almost all different types of cargo, from a few squads of marines to a standard terran cargo pod.
Tech Specs:
Weapons: Two forward Sirius Shipyards (SS) ballistic autocannons. Designed to be used in emergencies rather then active engaging.
Hull & Shields: 8cm of duranium (hardened titanium-tungsten alloy) and a shield generator providing 700 MJ (megajoule) protective layer.
Engines: Five SS drives (in fact designed for recon & interceptor vessels), providing an maximal speed of 75 m/s.
Crew: One pilot, one co-pilot. Eventually 4 squads of marines (32 men).
Note: Although it's wings add to the already big stance of the ATBM-3, it enables atmospheric flight if gravity is low and gas density high enough.
Pictures are attached. Note that this model isn't final and it may get some more polygons.
/EDIT: P.S.: Can somebody tell me how to create spheres in SketchUp? It would help me making a shield generator

Is it intended for FreeSpace? I always thought there should be more transport ship and freighter designs.
Errm.... I'm not a modeler, by the way. Looks good though. Maybe it's just me but the wings seem a little too stubby to me for it to be aerodynamic enough.
Then again I'm not an aerospace/astronautic engineer either. :D
-
As I have stated repeatedly, neither symmetry nor aerodynamic design is required for a spaceship.
Oh, wait, that says Aerospace, doesn't it? Ok, then, maybe aerodynamics is warranted.
Anyway: looks kinda like those bus type things on the 5th level of Bomberman 64. :p
I'm no modeler either (the best I've done is super-sized an asteroid... and even then I can't get the ****ed debris to work right), but it looks good for a first design.

It looks ok, it's very basic though, and the wings are wicked thin and just flat planes (wings curve and have thickness). Also, if this is intended for Freespace use, all of those drawn details won't show up after you export, sorry :(
And some bigger pictures next time would be helpful :D

OK.
It's not supposed to be for FS2, just made it for fun. The Wings aren't flat planes, thei're 3-Dimensional, actually 5 centimeters thick. I shall add a few polygons when I finally find the time for it. And note it's supposed for atmospheric flight with low gravity and relatively high atmospheric density, so it *might* fly on Mars or so...
-
Aerodynamically, the only way this ship will fly is if there is no atmosphere.
-
Whee! Now I can remove these ugly wings!
I honestly thank you! And this isn't meant ironically/sarcastic.

Anyways, is there actually a possibility to import a .skp model to Freespace 2 with a Mac? Curios anyway how it would look in FS2.
-
Export as a .3DS/.OBJ, and either use 3DS Max to convert it, or Truespace :) You'll need the full version of Sketchup to export to an external format, though, unless you can find a .SKP converter.

Oh my belove msj... :D
And that's an insider.
