Do they actually do anything not generated by SEXPs? I've used them in the last few missions of FS2 and I can't for the life of me work out what they do. In the demo mission they were brilliant, fighters got annihilated by ULTRA beams, but nothing seems to happen to them in other missions.

That special TAG effect is slightly complex to set. You have to use SEXPs on ships and you eventually have to change their weapons(Ultra AAA beams instead of normal AAAf beams) :)
-
Can one use them on FS2 stock missions without making changes to the maps in their current state?
-
Quite often.
It's not clear if the TAGs actually do anything without SEXPs, some people think they do slightly increase target priority, some don't. Whichever happens to be the case, the effect is not pronounced.

A TAG will increase target priority by about 70% for turrets, according to the code. The only other automatic effect that TAG will create is to make the ship always show up on AWACS.
So, any other affect to the game/mission must be provided by SEXPs.

Hm... So if you were piloting a capship, and someone TAGed something for you, would it work?
-
you'd have to have the SEXP in for the capital ship cause I don't think you could fire the beams yourself (im not sure cause I've never flown a cap ship)
bu it would show up on radar definitly and you could order fighters to take it out.
