Title: The Story of CoolHand's MiG-343 "foxhound"
Post by: --Steve-O-- on November 10, 2007, 10:13:18 am
Chinaman found this model made by a fella Named Coolhand in the void of the internet. Coolhand gave Chinaman permission to use this machine in a mod but there was a catch. almost 90,000 polies worth of catch. in addition it existed only in a .MAX format. So Chinaman asks me if i would be willing to take this model and attempt to cut down the polies and make it usable for FS and I being a man who fell in love with this model the moment i saw it.....could not resist.
originally i was going to see if i could just cut up the model and reuse parts from it....HA! when i decomposed the model to borrow parts it broke the model down into each and EVER face individually...all 82 some odd thousand faces...crashed my program it did. so that left me with only one other option. i would have to rebuild it completely from scratch using the original model as a guide all the while trying to remain as true to the design as possible and keeping the poly count as low as i can. for a while i began to think i was in over my head, especially looking the original over....the detail...my god. but so far so good. i'm still going to have to break out every dirty trick i can think of, but for the most part i think my salvation lies in SCPs detail box function, that way i can do up the greebles.
so now allow me to present with permission of Chinaman and Coolhand, the MiG-343 "Foxhound" and its FS2 Friendly rebuild...eventually FS2 Friendly rebuild. the screenies include the Pic that sold me on this project, WIP rebuild and the original former .MAX model for comparison.

Yowzah...

I remember seeing this in the original thread. I'm not a modeler but when I read how many polys it was made of I didn't think it would see the light of day again. Most impressive.

:D

You've got to be really hard to impress if that's only "impressive." :P

Well that was unexpected. MiG-343 and FS2 in the same sentence.

MiG-343 in Truespace3 -  :eek2: also unexpected
but for the most part i think my salvation lies in SCPs detail box function, that way i can do up the greebles.
Depends on the quantity of greebles, a normal map may be worth a shot.

Mater Domini! :eek2:

Ok, we could use this model in a future, right?

I'm looking for a superfighter. This Foxhound could be perfect. I wanted to model some superfighters with no success. By superfighter I mean a fighter that is much bigger than the others(it's actually even bigger than bombers), has an incredible payload and specs(the presence of many engines ensures high speed and turn rate).

How long is this model? Does it get close to my concept of superfighter? I'm interested on this model.

if I'm picturing the scale right it will be bigger than an Ursa. i don't know by how much though as i have yet to actually scale it down. as for release and use by the rest of the comunity, all parties involved are cool with it so expect it to hit the download site with in a week or so.

Fantastic!

Well, Hades is in the Steadfast time. Should the dimensions be different from the ones we need, he can always change them.

Oh, on a side note...is the Red StarTM going to be included? :P

once the general paintjob is done it shouldn't be a problem to add all the original decals and such. i can throw that in as a substitute map with the non-decal map. that way people can add their own if they wish, or use whats in the download.

Truespace poetry at its best.  I am in pure aw.  I can only hope to be able to achieve such heights in my lifetime.  Words are not enough here.

That is one BIG cannon at the front... like as though the minigun from KKND's Autocannon Tank was carefully taken out and mounted into place on that fighter's nose... :wtf:
