So, have any of you noticed that FreeSpace is almost ten years old? Within seven month from now, we better start preparing. I am wondering what we are going to do on that day. Hold a party, a press release, etc.
Any other ideas? Or was it already decided?
I really hope those [V] guys visit the forums...at least.
P.S. I searched the forum three times to check if someobdy said that before.
-
Maybe we could contact the guys at :v:.
-
ST:R will be out by then, and possibly TVWP as well. I wonder if BWO and INFSCP will? :)
-
TVWP? Oh and I agree about getting the :v: people here, I think they'd be impressed with all that's been accomplished!

:nervous:
:D
Wow, another Anniversary! I really enjoyed Ace Combat and Colony Wars' 10th Anniversaries. It's the turn of FreeSpace now. Let's get some :v: guys here, they still work as programmers(I don't remember where...THQ?) :)
-
Ya, THQ bought :v:
-
Let's contact THQ, then. We just have to send a link! :D

I highly doubt that the Volition people who worked on FS2 are oblivious to what goes on here. In fact, I know they're not - The uncompressed soundtracks, the directions for making Vasudan speak, there are several instances where they have directly helped out in one way or another. That none of them are active posters doesn't have to mean anything :)

I doubt INFSCP will, but INFASA almost certainly.
We could have a big FreeSpace party with the Volition staff and everything. That'd be really cool.

A Freespace Frenzy would be nice (a big multiplayer gathering, for those of you who weren't around on the VBB). The FS2Net infrastructure is now solid enough to support such a thing, ever since 3.6.9 came out.

True, but it would be terribly nice of them to post here from time to time, or at least on the anneversary, so we know they're still alive.
But I guess they are scared of all the fanboys who would chrash the server from all the activity if that happened. :P

No, gotta wait for the 15th for those... :(
-
This topic has been made before. INFASA is going to be that long in the pipes? And I believe that some of the :v: guys check in periodically. Ask the older admins and posters.
-
I have a few plans for the 10th anniversary...not sure if they will pan out just yet but I'm going to try a few things and see what comes of it.
Also...as memory serves...the first real mention of Descent: FreeSpace was back in a December 1997 PC Gamer preview on their website. There might have been earlier reviews but even at the time with the Alpha graphics the game just looked so cool. Turns out it was :)
-
Umm... I do hope that 3.6.10 will be out, so that we have stand-alone server capability... then we can rent like, I don't know, 10 multiplayer servers for that week, and blitz Google ads in every gamer gathering place (forums, moddb-esque places, etc), and generate some activity.. Just be sure to have the server message of the day include a mention of HLP Forums! ;)
-
Just looking through the Mantis list, it seems that Taylor fixed a bunch of bugs with the standalone server last month. I don't know if it's currently in an operational state though.
-
It's supposed to be fixed by 3.6.10 if memory serves...
In the SCP Dev Roadmap (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,48559.0.html), would the stand-alone server be "New FS2NetD code"?
-
I remember seeing an ad for it in familyPC when I was like 11, and I'd never played a real computer game before, so of course it looked awesome.
But god, 10 years? Raise your hand if you thought you'd be here for that long.

Don't forget the code: Dave Baranec himself sent it to the SCP.
It's just my opinion, but...I think they don't post here(or they post, playing the role of the n00bs/ not so expert players and modders) because they're most likely to be stormed by suggestions like "Why you don't contact the others?" "Why you don't find the original soundtracks?" "Why you don't send us the plans for FS3 so we can do the rest? Look at these MODs, we have the abilities to do it!"
-
What day of the week will it be, anyway? Monday? :doubt:
w00t! It's a Saturday!!! :D :D
-
Perfect day for having a big game then.
-
Big game WEEK!!!
-
Oh I can hardly wait...

If we've been waiting 10 years, big game month sounds more like it.

Well :) There was no SCP at the time...I got word that the Volition team had rallied to get Interplay to release the code as they had done with Descent and they succeeded. I was lucky enough to be there right on the frontlines and got the information onto the Volition Watch FTP servers as quickly as possible and then get the word out so people who could do something with it could do it. And do something they did :)
It was a very momentous occasion!

What do you know? Volition's "Red Faction III" is predicted to come out in 2008. Probably the [V] guys are too busy celebrating that release... :doubt:
-

No.
The stand alone code is mostly separate from the FS2NetD code.
-
Wait, which date would the anniversary be on?
-
Hmm, perhaps we could use http://www.gameservers.com/ or http://www.krypt.com/ ? IDK, someone would have to look into the cost etc. to see if it would be feasible.
-
we're deciding whether we want to get a multiplayer game together?
let's do it...
-
How about one minute of silence?
-
O.o If this is a reference to FS being "dead", I'm going to hit you.... with a wet noodle, but I'll still hit you.

Erm, depends. Date of the first release or date of the completion?
