Title: Ancient FPS gaming
Post by: Vasudan Commander on November 14, 2007, 07:31:40 am
Not sure about the young'ins, but anyone whos older then say , 18, might remember the huge flood of ultra-violent, ultra-funny FPS games, such as Blood, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem 3D , Doom series and the like, and the parent committies and do-gooders crying and whinging for 3D realms to be shut down because the games 'desensitize children'.

Unfortunately, even now, such games havent become freeware (theres trial shareware available), and they're imposible to find on the shelf in shops.

Those were the days....when a storyline meant nothing, and killing mindlessly and your 'hero' spurting out crack one-liners was the best   :P

I never played Shadow Warrior , though I played everything else. I'd have to say Duke Nukem 3D was the worst of them (especially the 'raw uncut' version (evidently become the first R18+ game))

This '3D' type of gaming was revolutionalized by Half Life.

Shadow Warrior was so wacky. Honestly, I haven't played it in probably about a decade, when I was around 9 or 10. Should I have been playing it at that age? Probably not. Deeply disturbing stuff, but highly entertaining.

And yes, I would agree that Duke3D was an awesomely spectacular game for its time. Even now, it's still got legs. Boy howdy, nothing like playing the LA level online back in the day and annoying the hell out of your mates by hiding in that little hidden apartment on the main street. :D

I played through Duke Nukem 3D just months ago. Of course the updated Windows XP version with "high-resolution" graphics package. At least the enemies look like 3d objects this time. But anyways, the game still kicks ass. Simply because of the attitude (problem) of the main character i.e. "Eat **** and die!" and humor. Not to mention the level design, which is still one of the best examples of ultimately playable levels, not counting the Second episode. I like the Shrapnel City best, short and funny levels. I found HL1 and HL2 quite boring after Duke Nukem 3D. That counts for every FPS since 1998s.

I still play Doom.  It has a very active community around it.

I still sit down and play Duke 3D for kicks every now and then.  :p

Anyone remember Rise of the Triad? That was another game in a similar style. The drunk launcher was great. :D

I liked Shadow-warrior a lot. I remeber playing it a lot in school.
I espacialy liked the stickybomb. "Mh sticky bomb liken you" or so he said when you attached it to someone ^_^
Also it was fun to ruin somones day with the Katana. "Splited personality"

Oh man that game was fun...also the nuke was great but had some flaws. Just stand around a corner or behind something at the right moment and you won't get hit. Best thing was the doublenuke. A nuke per second but you only got 2 of them.

Not freeware?  You can, at least, find a freeware DOOM engine, of course.  You sound like you own the game, so the .wad files are all you need.  :D

And of course, Marathon is freeware now. :D

Not that classic, but THE CLASSIC. IIRC that was the FIRST FPS.

When I first played it, (on a 486DX 33MHz, 4Mb RAM, and still even a 5 1/4 floppy  ;)), I remember saying: Wow!!! how nobody had done a game like this EVER before!!!!

Do you remember the combat against Hitler?

Anyone ever played Strife?

That was the last and best blaze of the DOOM engine IMHO.

worse?

For the record let me state, that DF was a gem in those days! It had a story! It was Star Wars!

...but Strife was better. It had voice acting! NPCs!
