There seems to be a hole in the extant FreeSpace ship lineup -- there is no Vasudan troop transport like the GTT Argo. Now it isn't unheard of for FreeSpace 2 to fail to provide a Vasudan counterpart to a Terran ship, but more surprisingly, it doesn't look like anyone in the community has risen to the task. I just looked on Hades Combine and SectorGame, and didn't find anything. Scroll doesn't have one either.
Am I missing something, or has nobody actually ever done a Vasudan large transport?
-
Now you mention it, i don't think there is... Someone skinned the ma'at at some point waaaaaaaaay back, but it just didn't feel right.
-
Wasn't there one in Inferno the GVT Isten ?

I don't count that, as it looks Terran, not Vasudan. :p
-
The Satis, maybe?
What do you mean? The Vasudans have plenty of transports and freighters even if they don't have a perfect counterpart to every single Terran ship.
There's one FS1 multi mission where you intercept an HoL "marine convoy" (as in ground soldier marines) composed of Isises and freighters. Also, in Belisarius you're escorting Vasudan refugees in Satises, so those could be used as troop transports just as well.
-
I also found myself wanting one of these several times when building the PI missions. The Isis is very small, smaller than many fighters, and is not comparable to the Argo. I ended up just reskinning a Ma'at and made up an explanation in the tech room for why it was like that, but that was not really an ideal solution.

Have you ever compared the sizes of the transports in FRED? The Argo is big, significantly bigger than the Elysium, which is itself about three times bigger than the Isis.
The Satis is the largest Vasudan ship below cruiser class but has only one-eighth the volume of the Argo.
-
Which is really odd considering how tall Vasudans are.
I'm thinking the GVT Isis is more of a VIP/SpecOps transport.
-
Didn't notice that. Hm, everything looks different when you pay attention. :wtf:
Good luck in your search. But it's no surprise that the Vasudans lack an Argo. For a bulk transport of large numbers of troops you probably wouldn't see many of their big transports, whatever those are, seeing as how they have a preference for small and fast stuff. The Horus, the Seth, the Satis- all are lighter faster than their Terran counterparts. So just because the Vasudans didn't design the TC-TRI doesn't mean that they would want one of those monsters, they just like to keep it small.
An Aten has comparable speed and HP to an Argo (13500 Argo vs 18000 Aten) and I think that it would fill the gap nicely, if noone steps up to the plate and models something.
-
I'd say that the Satis would make a better pseudo-heavy transport.
-
Vasudans don't need transports, that's what cruisers are for :nervous:
-
It may be rather difficult to dock a cruiser to another large ship, too many turrets and other projections that would get in the way.
-
I did it in my campaign, albeit not very successfully. (i.e. destroying the Arcadia Installation it was docking to, but that's okay, it worked the second go-around)

Kind of a reskinned Isten from INFR1. It looks pretty good IMO, but on the underside, there's a patch that looks just plain disgusting. I was thinking of getting the mapping there fixed but couldn't be bothered to. If I was using normal maps I suppose it would have looked even better... This is an old version, the new version has cruisertile3 assigned to the turret map...
Want?
-
I don't count the Isten, either, personally. It needs underside defenses, dangit! So many of those Vasudan models from INFR1 have little to no underside defense whatsoever. Besides which, it just doesn't look Vasudan enough. Sorry, but there it is.
For my Zod-transport needs, I'm reusing the Mekhet, but I'd honestly love to have a dedicated model for that role.
-
Mekhet? Can have?
-
I searched for it and found it on the forum a little while back.
Here it is. (http://web.njit.edu/~pjo3/mekhet.zip)
-
Oh, lol, I'm using that as a cruiser...
-
Snail: Me wants!
Mad Bomber: I had to retexture the whole thing...since the original looks horrible.

Glad someone likes it. :D
I used one of TrashMan's textures (VAsSingleEngine.pcx) for the engines. He says in his sig I can use all of his stuff freely, so I guess I didn't need to contact him first.

Thanks snail, finally I have a proper Vasudan transport!
That thing is pretty big...but still cannot beat the terrans :D

Hey Goober5000 here are two models Axem made.
They may say cruisers, but I bet the might work for you.

Well, they aren't in POF format, so I can't use them. And I can't open the files to see what they are, since I don't have a modelling program.
-
Oh sorry.
-
Ooh, someone's using the Mekhet! Niiice. ;)
After some pestering from Goober I went ahead and made the GVT Qeb, named for that silly Vasudan Argo in the main FS2 campaign.
It has some functional but sloppy POF editing, and probably needs to be cleaned up some (radius fixed, paths tweaked etc.)
Get it here (http://web.njit.edu/~pjo3/qeb.zip)
And yeah, this is the first mod I've done in at least a year. Felt kinda good. Maybe I'll stop by a little more often. :)

For your further enjoyment, Vasudan Admiral has provided two of his really old models... old enough that he wants to make clear that they're released without endorsement or support of any kind. ;)

Er, they both come up as Forbidden.
The Qeb is cool tho.
-
Well, that makes three of us -- you, me, and Cobra -- who can't access those links. Hunter needs to get his host to loosen the security restrictions.
I'm temporarily mirroring them on HLP until someone can get them up on Hades Combine or somewhere.

I love how, despite months or years of inactivity, you can still rock up, model, texture and pof a decent looking ship more or less on a whim. Wanker :p

Then again in FS2 most Vasudan ships have little to no underside defences. The Sobek has just 2 blob turrets and a flak turret, the mentu just has 2 blob turrets.........
-
yup. Zods are top-heavy ship lovers.
-
That's some really nice ships there
They got the real sluggish look, which I like. :p
-
All right. After some assistance from StratComm and taylor, and a lot of fiddling around in PCS2, ModelView, and a hex editor, I can finally present the fully finished and outfitted GVT Qeb. Enjoy. :)
