Title: Specialized searching

I think this is the right section, but is there a way of searching for threads with pictures? I'd like to go through the modding forum looking for abandoned ships, mostly out of curiosity, and maybe find something nice.

I don't think there is a way. Your best bet would be to just look through FS modding by hand.
