Is it possible to have the cockpit radar display rather than display a flat 2D screen, display a 3D-ball on the screen (the screen would be flat, the radar display would be 3D, and ball-shaped, spherical meaning to provide 3D situational awareness)

Click "3D Radar" in the Launcher, under the HUD tab.

I allways found the 3D ball more irritating then helping ^_^

I wish the radar would have larger blips to represent larger vessels. Or maybe if the radar was a bit bigger.
While I do like the 3d radar, I believe it is a bit small.

a 3d tac-map with 3d ship icons would be cool. you can see what the ships are, what direction theyre pointing, and what team their on by color coding. probibly done up in wireframe. that would be cool.

Is it possible though to have the 3D radar appear on one of the MFD screens? (Not that I'm opposed to having it on the HUD too)

Now that people mention. With as useful as the 3d radar is, it really could stand to be bigger. It is pretty tiny. On smaller monitors it's slightly a pain to use to have to get close to a monitor to see the orientation of the blips. On a bigger monitor this is alleviated, but still a bigger 3d orb for the radar would be way cool and easier to read. Just a bigger version of the current one is all that's really needed.

How bout just a way to press a key and the 3D orb would expand out to a larger
size - press key again and it will retract to the original size?
That way both groups are satisfied and the larger one wouldn't be in the
way all the time.

How about semi-transparent (say 30%) 3D-hidden wireframes for "distanced" objects and 60% 3D wireframes for "close" objects? Making a generic icon for each class (cruiser/corvette/destroyer/juggernaught/fighter/bomber/cargo/other) of ship, I would think, would be fine.

I sometimes have problems trying to work out if a contact is behind or ahead of me when using 3D radar. Perhaps enlarging it, and/or making it into a sort of semi-transparent sphere instead of having two rings showing its perimeter, would help.
Either that or I could just look at the off-screen indicator I suppose. :D

why not just render wireframes of the 2nd or 3rd lod. then you can see every ship as it is in 3d.
