Title: New player, need some help
Post by: catbarf on November 24, 2007, 11:00:35 pm
Well, after playing FS1 and FS2 when I was eight, I've gone back and decided to play them again. I found this mod for FS2, and I must say it is quite impressive. Now, I've got just a few issues:

1. The integrated graphics hardware on my laptop doesn't like OpenGL- the game crashes on startup. The error log says:
fs2_open_3_6_9 caused an Access Violation in module atioglxx.dll at 001b:69361204.
So I need to use Direct3D8. There's just one issue- it doesn't play the cutscenes (which are in the VP pack included with the installer, by the way). I searched around a bit, but quite a few links are broken and so I am left without much of a clue as to where to get the movies in another format and how to set them up.

2. Is there a way to increase the mouse sensitivity? Even on the highest setting, it's far too low for my touchpad.

3. Do the FS1 and FS2 soundtracks sound very similar? I'm not sure, but I believe the music may not be functioning correctly and I may be hearing FS2 music.

Thanks for your time. And to the developers: You've done a stupendous job on this, and I commend you on your efforts. Keep up the good work!

:welcomered:

That OpenGL thing sounds like a driver issue and it might be dang near impossible to fix it due to the fact that you have an integrated graphics card. The cutscenes won't play in Direct3D. In general, you should always prefer OpenGL since Direct3D isn't supported anymore, but might be tough luck if you can't get it working.

2. If you mean using your mouse/touchpad as a controller for you ship, I'd recommend using just your keyboard. I can find and post a link to one of my posts where I listed the changes I made to the default configuration in order to make it work on a laptop keyboard.

3. They are quite different, so if you are sure that you're hearing exactly the same music in FSPort as you are in FS2, something is wrong. Either you're missing the warble_fs1.vp or you have some really bizarre issues with the game.

Thanks for the help. As for the keyboard, I can use the keys, I'm just used to the touchpad in most of my games. I'll go back and pay more attention to the music this time, and come back if it's the FS2 music.

Edit: The music is different. I really like the FS1 soundtrack. There's just one new issue I ran across- my game lags when I look anywhere near the sun. Is there any way to disable the normal solar effects?

I would guess that problem with stars is Direct3D related problem and thus likely won't be receiving any attention since D3D support is in fast process of going down the drain.

Also, I have no idea whether it's the sun glare or the sun textures that is causing the problem. I think there's some way to modify the sun glare strength, but I don't know if it would affect the slowdowns at all.

Hmm. I wish I could get OpenGL to work, this is quite annoying.

Get a mac :D
Or install Linux. Ubuntu ships free CD's.

Well, for now I'm going to stick with Windows, thanks  :D

I think I've found my issue- it seems that anything that produces a glow effect screws everything up. This means engine glow on large capships, the sun, stuff like that. Is there a way to disable the glow?

Well... I guess it never hurts to try.

Go to Launcher, "Features"-tab, select "Graphics" (should be the default selection from the list anyway), untick "Enable glowmaps".

If that doesn't help, try unticking "Enable specular" as well.

The Shivan ships will look the most different without glowmaps... but seeing how they are described as "death black ships" in FS1 intro movie, it might actually not be too bad a thing, especially if it makes it possible for you to play in the first place. :)

I've had them unticked. It doesn't seem to help, I still drop from 60 to 30 FPS when I look at the sun or an engine glow.

Could just be that your PC can't handle the MediaVPs.

Aha, I fixed the issue. I have no idea why, but turning down to 16-bit color has removed all lag and I can now play with everything else maxed, and at 1024x768  :wtf:

Most likely your GFX card doesn't like doing 3D in 32-bit?  What kind of GFX card do you have?  (see GPU-Z, in my sig).
