Title: Problems with Fighters Launching from Whitehall and Docking
Post by: Hyper Ion on November 25, 2007, 04:34:59 pm
This was never answered in one of my old threads, so I'll ask it again. I have the Whitehall version 2 (beautiful station it is), but no fighter/cruiser/destroyer/anything can launch from it. It's been pathed and it has the docking bay subsystems, if that's any help. I put in a computer-controlled ship of the same team status as the Whitehall, put the arrival location from a docking bay, but the Whitehall isn't on the list. Now, I throw in an Orion, and the Orion and only the Orion is on the list; still no Whitehall.

Even if I do get this fixed, I'm still worried how the fighters and the cruiser will launch. The worst case scenario that I invision is a Deimos popping out of the fighterbay rather than its appropriate cruiser bay. My contingency plan for the whole ordeal is to make "invisible" models and put them near each docking bay, giving me strict control of what fighter comes out of each bay. The problem here is that I've never made my own ship or wrote a custom .tbl file, so I have idea how to carry that plan out.

On a more unrelated note, how would I enable an Orion or Hecate to (un)dock with a station such as the Whitehall? I already know I'll need to give them acceleration values for movements other than forward, but what other extra things must I include?

In playing around with FRED, I finally learned that only transports and support ships can be given the (un)dock goal. This comes as a slight problem when wanting a Hecate docked with the massive Whitehall. Of course, I can assign the ship to be pre-docked to the station, but I have no means of undocking it in mission.

Strange...I'll have a look into it. Could be something wrong with the fighterbay paths (but I could sware I named the mall properly)

As for the docking if you want a ship docked with the station you set in FRED under the DOCKED WITH (ship editor).

If you want to undock at a certain time, just use a AI-GOAL sexp (events editor) and set it to undock

URgh...just checked.
I don't know how or why ..and how nobody noticed this before, but my fighterbay paths are not named properly fbay01 insted of bay01.. I could SWARE I fixed that ages ago..as well as put more paths...something's fishy here.

I'll fix that and re-upload just the .pof somewhere.

I've already tried this in FRED with an Arcadia. I can set the ship to be docked with the station, but the undock SEXP is still grayed out. I can't even order the ship to undock in its initial orders menu.

Looks like a FRED bug to me.

B.t.w. - here's the whitehall.pof with the fixed paths.

Thanks for the Whitehall. It can launch things now. Just wondering, do you plan on pathing the cruiser bay? It would make things much easier rather than doing goofy FREDing.

I should note that the (un)dock SEXP works just fine with transports. It's ships like destroyers that it gets greyed out on.

There's a problem. Currently, there is no way to tell a ship WHICH fighterbay path to use. So you'd probably end up with a corvette exiting the fighterbay :P
I planned to add them, but given this obstacle, I didn't.

That's odd. I just now found out that you can restrict arrival paths in FRED, which is why I asked. :p

I must have missed that.

Well I guess I could add a few new paths then...and some glows while I'm at it :P

I'll keep you peeps posted.

Kinda reminds of a thread ages ago, where something like an Orion was launching a wing of Colloseus.
