I'm emailing freespace to a friend, and i was wondering if he should use FS open
I don't know the minimum requirements for FS open? are some versions less then others?
Both our computers are OLD. Mine is a 2002 PC, and he has a 1998 computer. Can you please tell me what the best Version to DL, if any, will work with that?
I tried installing and for some reason it did not play. The files for enhanced graphics give me an error message saying it can't find the files. If it wont work on mine, it wont work on his.
Can you please tell me?

A PC from 1998 is most likely way too outdated for FSO, but should be able to run the original FS2, depending on the hardware.
2002 sounds better, but it really depends on your hardware too. Of course you won't be able to use all enhancements with a PC like that.
The minimum requirement should be something like this:
1 Ghz CPU
512 MB Ram (I doubt 256 will do...)
Hardware Transform and Lighting graphics card 32MB (T&L is required!)
OpenAL (Software) compatible sound card
For full quality (High-Res + Antialiasing and Anisoptropic Filtering) without any framedrops I suggest a system like this:
2 Ghz C2D or 4200+ A64
2 GB Ram
Shader 3.0 graphics card - at least Geforce 7800 or Radeon X1900 series with at least 256 MB ram
OpenAL (Software) compatible sound card.

What about 448 mb ram?
I get an error message saying something about swapping buffers and it not being able to do it.

Or, in the words of the error message:
Error: Couldn't open texture 'hornetall-b'
referenced by model 'hornet.pof'
File:C:\projects\freespace2\code\Model\ModelRead.cpp
Line: 1802
Call stack:

or when i try running FS2 open...
Error: Unable to swap buffers
Error code: 0
File:J:\src\cvs\fs2_open_3_6_9.final\code\graphics\gropengl.cpp
Line: 1650

Both sound like graphic card or graphic driver issues.
What kind of graphic card do you have and when did you update your drivers the last time?
Also did you download the MediaVPs?

I put in the Effects one, and it says it has new subspace effects, but they look the same. So do afew other things. And putting in the Models one only made it give the first error message.

He said he has 448MB available. This probably means he has 512MB base RAM, and integrated video on the mobo which leeches 64MB off of that.
In other words, he doesn't have an actual video card. Should be enough to activate SCP without much in the way of graphical improvements, at least, but it's not going to be uber-flashy under any circumstances.
The friend with the '98 computer should probably just run Retail. I have a feeling high-poly models would cause his compy to melt or something.

Where can i download additional things like better explosions, subspace portals, beams, please? So that i can have it look better withuot FS open please?
